The main problem was reading back through messages. As soon as someone posts, you get forwarded through to that message, making it near impossible to read through any past messages if the group is active.

Yeah, true, whatsapp, like skype goes to the last unread one. Skype overworks my ancient PC though.

Well, I guess all you can do is give it a shot, Luke. keep any eye on stuff, and send some invites. If anyone complains about ppl misusing numbers or anything, deal with it then.

Yeah, that would be an issue :/

If it's a small group with people who all knew each other to begin with then it's manageable. It's when the group starts to grow that it can become exposed imo.

Yeah, agreed.

Bit late if someone starts to be malicious with a number, especially in a way that doesn't reveal who it is. But then that's up to any person joining the group to know they are putting their number out there in such a way.

What about other apps that don't involve phone numbers being shared?

Slack was already tried by Michael Keeniey and that failed miserably.

Auditing who is allowed in would be a good call. Having an age limit would work too. (that's a lower age limit, in case big bad Steven Hill is reading....love ya Steve) :D

A few people have joined but I get the concern. Hopefully this can serve as a catalyst for the next big group in such an app. I'll have a look around but if anyone knows of something feel free.

How does a huge WhatsApp group differ from a huge FB Messenger group?

Don't understand why one would be "difficult to navigate" and not the other, but never used either with a group overly huge, so maybe missing something when they get to 100+ members.

I fine facebook msger Hard to Navigate but Whatsapp is easy .

The only thing I don't like about Messenger is that you can't stop people from adding you to a group if they're on your friend list.

I also have the whatsapp program but don't know how that is compared to messenger (better/worse?).

Personally I prefer the Skype but dont mind using whatsapp. I've used Skype for over 10 seasons and its been quite effective. I currently use it on both phone and computer and the whole Martini team is quite active on it aswell. I see its not the case for many other people in the community though as we even used to have a public gpro group and its dead now.

Anycase, count me in for whatever app you use.

With Telegram you will not need to give your phone number to anyone. You don't even need a phone. Those without a smartphone or with a BlackBerry cannot use whatsapp. With telegram you can share any type of file. Don't know whether now it is possible with whatsapp, but it was not some months ago. Only thing Telegram does not have at the moment is the possibility to make calls. Oh, and Telegram keeps record of your last read message, even if you change client (from phone to pc client or web client).

Only trouble with WhatsApp is like ppl have allready said it gives out your number and no offence to any one here but there are that many bugs going round for example a number that I don't even now text me the other day causing my iPhone to lock and about 3 months ago another number sent me a text that cost ME £5 how that works i ant got a clue and as I don't know any one from Adam here it's not something I would like would it be better if we nagged the programmer's here to add a live chat like the one on race day but permanent??

"LINE" app is much better than whatsapp, has all whatsapp functions and many others available and does not show your number.

It is permanent, people just need to come in and chat more between races, it doesnt hold the conversation though, so not like FB or Whatsapp

Specifically mIRC or any IRC client? I mean kudos for picking the only acceptable client, but either way no... because its 2017 not 2007.

discord would probably be a much much better option for doing this sort of thing

it works with phones as well but does not require giving your phone number out

Plus, it could possibly be looked at as a replacement for the official chat.

Agreed. Discord is the ultimate platform. Free, easy, better than skype, doesn't give out any private info. Also can be browser based and doesn't require invites.
