Honda's president says that he agreed with McLaren in the end that it was best for both companies to split at the end of this season, as their divorce was made official on Friday.
As news of the McLaren-Honda break-up was formally confirmed at the Singapore Grand Prix, Takahiro Hachigo said he was sad the partnership had not delivered results, but said that in the end it would not have been good for them to stay together.
"It is unfortunate that we must part ways with McLaren before fulfilling our ambitions, however, we made the decision with a belief that this is the best course of action for each other's future," he said, in a statement issued by McLaren.
"On behalf of Honda, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to fans who have been very supportive of the team as well as the drivers, team members and everyone involved who shared with us in the joys and disappointments since we began preparing for our return to F1 in 2015.
"Honda will continue the fight together with McLaren all the way to the end of the 2017 season, and then continue its F1 racing activities in 2018 and beyond."
McLaren executive chairman Shaikh Mohammed bin Essa Al Khalifa echoed Honda's thoughts about the need to split.

The best move is bring back their own supercar engines, McLaren-Renault sounds ridiculous.

I will never understand why McLaren does not develop its own engines, have the money, and the ability.
or maybe why dont go for a cosworth.

Don't underestimate how hard it is to develop engines. You claim they have the ability, I think you are very wrong. Getting things like lubrication and cooling right is extremely difficult and requires a lot of experience. And that's not even talking about the double hybrid system which is even more complicated.
There is a reason why every single engine manufacturer in the world is a company with decades, if not a century, of experience.
McLaren might start doing it though, if the new engines in 2021 will be simple enough. They would have to start by assigning an army of headhunters to recruit experience from other manufacturers right into the McLaren group. Or even better, acquiring a whole company that does engine-related stuff.

€ 150M to just to develop an enige is not pocket money. Not even for McLaren.
Anyway, I hope they do much better next season and of course Alonso staying. More competition is exactly what F1 needs.
In the aftermath it is said that Red Bull will not make use of Honda from 2019 onwards. Dutch media who quote Christian Horner: There will be an announcement soon, it will not be Honda or Porsche. We have a deal with another maufacturer.

Rumors are that Mercedes are thinking on becoming only an engine supplier and selling there team in the future, so maybe Red Bull is going for Mercedes engines ?

I heard someone say that when Honda first went into Indycar in the 1990's they were just as bad there than in F1 now, but now they have sorted it out and are one of the top suppliers, it just takes time. You never know, if Red Bull does go to Honda for 2019, they might strike gold

Mercedes are not leaving before 2021 for sure. They have invested a LOT of money in the current engine programme and will stay in F1 as long as they can run these engines. Whether they will stay when the new engine formula comes, is a different question.

Not for 2019. I can't imagine Red Bull using anything else than Honda or Renault in 2019. Merc and Ferrari won't supply them, and no other supplier will suddenly step in for those last two years of the current engine formula.
