Ferrari have announced that Daniil Kvyat will be a development driver for them next season. No more details have been released yet other than that he is officially taking this role.

Interesting choice perhaps? He has the talent and I think he deserves this oppertunity and may very well improve himself from this position, he may be more likely to listen to Ferrari telling him what to do than the likes of Marko which has been stated by Red Bull as one of his problems. who knows how this will go.

But surely he won't ever get in front of Giovinazzi and Leclerc in the programme. Its an alright addition but i don't think he'll get very far

it seems like Kvyat has taken Giovanzzi's 2017 role judging from what is being said or will be sharing Giovanzzis 2017 role.

Also Kvyat hasn't been added to the Driver Development programme like Leclerc is, Kvyat is THE development driver so will do things such as run in the simulator in a Ferrari Hungary '17 situation.

Aaaaah fair enough. Well he has the experience of the 2017 cars so the fact he can develop things will help the team out

They had Vergne in this role for two years but he left early 2017. Indeed I think they like having a development driver with recent F1 racing experience.

I don't get why he doesn't get himself a seat in a LMP1 with SMP next year. They have stated that they want to run their two cars with Russian drivers and surely he is one of the best Russian drivers around. That way, he could have a shot at Le Mans.

Instead, he remains chasing the Formula One dream that has most probably already passed for him. Especially considering he doesn't have the finances in place to get a pay drive.

Who says he can't combine the Ferrari role with a race seat in LMP1 or whatever other class? Vergne combined it with a Formula E seat.

And he did Le Mans as well didn't he?

Yeah 2017 whole WEC calendar baring Nurburgring, but he may have already left the program during the season

He did last year, but he was no longer a Ferrari driver at the time.

I believe Russia is the only country to have a 100% podium rate with their drivers currently ;)

EDIT: Okay Poland also :P

So how this works is: Kvyat has taken over Giovanazzis role as Ferrari third driver so if Kimi or Seb are forced to miss race for some reason it would be Kvyat to take over. Giovanazzi isn't in this role anymore because he is third driver for Sauber in 2018.

A few reasons people have suggested for this choice:

-If Kimi shows no improvement drop kvyat in to the second ferrari mid season since he has far more experience than any other Ferrari affiliated driver.

- Daniil will bring in knowledge of the Renault PU and development as well as some slightly out dated RBR knowledge. Similar to what they did to Vergne.

- Use him as a defensive measure against Mercedes by having Daniil do his thing.

- Kimi not being 100% committed to another season and Ferrari fearing Kimi may walk away mid season leaving them without an experienced back up plan.

Keep your friends close, but keep your enemies closer!

Take him out of the tracks, and ifhe drives let him crash other cars and no Ferraris
