Can anyone help me? Our computer was just attacked by a mole file or mole wear. It has encrypted everything and we have lost everything we have on it. Everyone of our pictures with the kids was on it. Am distraught.

GPRO is not the place for computer help. You have to ask through some sort of computer support forum. But I'm guessing this "Mole file" was like ransomware?

Hope you make regulary backups...
Only thing you can do is go to the police and complaint
good luck, I know this is't funny at all to deal with

Our external hard drive with all the back ups was attached at the time. Everything is gone.

Try to look up what exactly you have and see if there are any steps on how to remove it.
I did a quick search and it sounds like ransomware but solutions really vary. There is a chance that is it just a malicious programme encrypting the files on boot up. Try to disable things on start up to eliminate it. Or take out your hard drive and put into an external reader to see if they really are encrypted, and if not you can copy them.

Can you plug the external hard drive into another machine? And are the files encrypted
And make sure you don't run anything executable and infect another machine :)

Okay, I'm just gonna ask right off the bat: What did I do wrong?

Try "Malware Bytes" I've always had luck with their free platform when my computer has contracted stuff like that.

There are more than a few people playing this game who have awesome IT knowledge and possibly are willing to help. (I'm not one of them, my IT knowledge is too limited)

Quote ( Phil Maunder @ April 29th 2017,23:57:19 ) I did a quick search and it sounds like ransomware but solutions really vary. If it hasn't asked for anything (like $$), it can hardly be called ransomware :)
With this information it's quite impossible to say what it was, but with any luck it was just a run of the mill "light malware", which should be reversible relatively easily

Gpro has countless people who's daily life (work/studies) revolve around IT,

Hard to say. Ransomware?

Have you tried typing in your search engine this "MOLE File Virus – Remove It and Restore Your Data" ?

|
|
How does infected file look like? I mean what is it, .mole or something else?

In the future just pay 9$ a month for Dropbox Business, gives 1000GB storage, and is reachable from mobile, tablet, pc etc.
For now.... I am not an expert, but try to write down what you noticed and than use a different machine to google the issue. Sometimes the tips online can get you into the right direction and take some step yourself to regain control over your files.
Good luck mate !

External backup huh? But you keep it in the same house as your computer..... fire.... will still destroy both Leave the external drive (with back up date) somewhere else !

Although I get your point. :-)

The "next gen" ware is able to go automatically updated cloud drives too.
Many cloud services pride themselves with "ease of access" where you have "a folder" on your device where you drop your files and it gets automatically updated to cloud.
So when an unwanted "ware" updates (encrypts) your local files, no wonder it also does the same for the cloud wares with the same ease

But you keep it in the same house as your computer..... fire.... will still destroy both Leave the external drive (with back up date) somewhere else ! Still at this day and age the only proper backup is external and physically disconnected one.
And the term "physically disconnected" is extended to mean also cloud services, in other words No updates allowed without the user activating the connection Sure, that kind of setup is a bit less convenient (i.e required login every time), but it does increase safety

Although I get your point. :-) Since your external drive is now disconnected from the pc, you can grab it on your way out at the same time you grab your clothes :)
That way you'll have photos of your house and stuff in it for the insurance company

Use cloud
Edit: I still want to save my Walkman tho

Quote ( Stuart McIntyre @ April 30th 2017,20:49:04 ) Use cloud
Worth mentioning that there are differences there too, some huge differences
For example: Some free ones don't offer backup at all
Some free ones might offer backups, but they would only backup the current files, so if the current files get encrypted so would the backups, so it would be of no use
Usually the incremental backups are only in paid versions. In those you could roll-back to the non-encrypted files
So if the malware reaches the cloud due to automatic updates/login, only the cloud with incremental backup makes a difference
Bottom line: When using a cloud service, pay close attention to what you get and the settings you use

How does any of this help Stu save his Walkman?

It doesn't :)
But it may help some people avoid potential issues in the future
