Those are exactly the things everybody would say in that situation, no matter if it's true or not.

KUB stated it before FP1. Of course he could said that because he knew he would be slow ;-)

I think we could say anything about his pace after first quali or race of 2019. Only there we will be sure that he tried to give 100% from him and the car.

I genuinely wish Robert all the best for 2019. If only one thing his comeback proves is that nothing is impossible and to not give up on a dream. For the likes of young guys like Billy Monger I am sure he will be (and has been already) a source if much inspiration. My personal belief remains that WIlliams are a bit silly to pass up on Ocon given that Toto Wolff said at Mexico that it was in Claire's hands as to whether Ocon raced or not next season.

I don't doubt that Kubica will give his absolute best and hopefully score lots of points too, but I do feel Ocon should have been a talent high on their agenda to do everything possible to get him in a seat. I don't believe WIlliams have tried hard enough to secure the best possible line-up. But of course, best wishes to Kubica, he was and remains a top driver with a top attitude, nobody can take that away from him - he's a credit to his country for sure. I'm very sure there's a lot of proud poles this morning.

He stated clearly that we shouldn't care about his FP1 times as he won't do it neither. He starts 2019 preparations. Let's wait for pre-seasons tests to judge his pace.

Exzctly. If you boil down everything to which driver did the quickest lap most recently out of two team mates it's just really, really short sighted.

Well yes....you expect that Kubica might race beyond that? For any driver to think their seat is safe beyond one year...you have to be special or at least cemented in your position to have that luxury. There arn't many drivers of that ilk. I do think Williams will change driver again next year, so if the question is whether you'd put Ocon in knowing you may only get a year cos he might get moved up to a Merc seat? Why not....Bottas would need to go somewhere when that happens and I wouldn't see any other option for him. Its all hypothetical though.

Kubica deserves his chance anyway. Wasn't he faster than Sirotkin at last year's Abu Dhabi test? People comparing his FP1 session shouldn't ignore that there's a vast difference between driving all season in the cockpit to having just a handful of sessions. The only fair basis of comparison between Sirotkin and Kubica would therefor be last year's test at Abu Dhabi. Williams have a big problem after next year though if they come last again though I feel. Which is precisely why I felt all along they should have gone all out to try and secure the best possible line-up. I don't think they can afford to be running at the back for too long, especially not when they lose their title sponsor and consequently Haas beat them to the one they had negotiated with for quite some time (Rich energy). So, its a big year for Williams in 2019 for sure. They have to be beating at least one of Sauber or Toro Rosso, ideally both.

no, he wasn't. I mean, depends on how to interpret it. Sirotkin was faster almost by 0.3 sec average in long program. If to compare their fastest laps, you can see that digits is not the main thing:
Kubica: 1:39.485 (Hypersoft, evening)
Sirotkin: 1:39.947 (Soft, morning)

Kubica was faster by almost 0.5 sec but he has "faster track" and softer by 3 levels tyres compound

Kubica Abu Dhabi FP1 lap onboard, Anthony Davidson analysis of Kubica driving style
https://streamable.com/iy1ns
Yes, I don't know what he can do in extreme situation but that's how he do left corners is quite unique. I don't know if he do it by automatic moves but it looks like he is fighting with the car. I still doubt if he will be competitive in the next season but I respect a lot of his character. I'm sure that most of drivers doesn't think about returning in his situation but Kubica showed us that he is a real fighter. His driving style is a great challenge.

My opinion,

I think it's great that Kubica is back in a race seat, I won't make any comments or judgements on his performance until the Australian gp next year. Yes he has done some fp1 sessions and a test session. but as we know the teams have a program to run for data etc.

he is an inspiration along with young Billy Monger, that if you work hard enough to follow your dream, those dreams can come true no matter what the circumstances etc.

And I'm 99% sure that if he feels he is not up to the job he will move on.

So at least see how his actual season as a driver pans out, good or bad (hopefully good).

Points in the worst car on the grid. The coolest of heads when everyone else was desperate to sample the gravel at turn 16. Not bad for a one armed 34 year old who's been out of the sport for almost a decade.

Doesn't take long for quality to rise to the surface.

My opinion on Kubica - if he does well enough as test driver, could he possibly replace Räikönnen?

Highly unlikely. That seat is being saved for Schumacher.

I've read recently that Mike still has a lot to learn in F2, before joining F1.

As I wrote in another thread, I'd like to see FP1 with KUB in Alpha Romeo, to find out if he was that slow in Williams or RUS that fast. Still waiting :-)

Russell is fast but surely isn't in the top ~5 drivers or so(not yet anyway), so being that slow in comparison to that is still very bad.

Well, Räikkönnen could possibly retire after 2022, and by then, Mick Schmuacher would of probably have gone too Renault or Toro Rosso, so I personally think that Kubica or even Nico Latifi could get that seat, cause by then, George Russell might of replaced Lewis Hamilton. Who knows what next season or 2022 wil bring.

Well, to be fair, it would still be a miracle if he got in the Alfa Romeo car and did a FP1 lap. Which could be said of the whole of last year and testing the year before.
