Why only have games featuring Sonic as the main character? Heck, why only have games where Sonic is in it? Meet Tails Sky Patrol, a game for the Game Gear released in 1995, a year later than Sonic 3 & Knuckles. This game was released in Japan alone (with appearances in collection titles) , and is yet another spin-off of the Sonic franchise.
In this game, you control Tails, who traveled to a tropical island to stop Witchcart (not Dr. Robotnik!!!) who has turned its inhabitants into crystals! Tails is constantly flying, and he gets tired, so you need to keep collecting candies to keep him flying in order to complete the stage! Tails has a gold ring with him which he can shoot onto the enemies and contraptions on the stage to interact with them. You only have 5 levels in this game, but it’s a Game Gear game, so expectations should always be low.
There isn’t much to talk about this game, it is plain and simple, and there isn’t much plot complexity. The game ends with Tails flying alone in the sky. It’s said to be an incredibly difficult level, despite the target audience.

It’s a small game, granted, but it isn’t often that Tails gets a game for himself. In fact there is only another game of the sorts, Tails Adventure, which was also released in 1995. Tails is a hugely underrated character, probably due to him being a sidekick, but he could really use more games with him as the main character. But that’s just coming from a fan such as myself!
The graphics are absolutely amazing for a Game Gear game. Just stunning. I haven’t played the game myself, so I can’t comment on its difficulty, but it is a characteristic of the classic sonic games; as time moves on, you will notice that games start getting easier and easier...
I didn’t play the last game, but I sure did play this one! Sonic The Fighters is here, and it's a super fun game! Released in June of 1996, and look, it’s 3D! On what console you ask? Well…
This one! That’s right, this is an arcade game, later included in Sonic Gems Collection, and that’s how I played it. This game was built using the 3D fighting engine for Fighting Vipers (look it up!), and it is yet another spin-off to close up the Classic Era!
In this introduction I will talk about the Mega Collection version, that is the Gamecube/PS2 version. You have 2 modes, the Arcade Mode and the Multiplayer Mode, while the Multiplayer Mode is self explanatory, in which you battle a friend with a character of your choosing, in the Arcade mode you fight 8 opponents 1 by 1 to get all of the 8 (???) chaos emeralds, and then you fight Metal Sonic and Dr. Robotnik with your Super Form. We’ll get to that.
However, there are only 8 characters. So you must be wondering, do you fight yourself at some point? Well, sort of! Before the fight begins you are standing along, but Robotnik shows up and makes a clone out of you, coloured grey, and you fight that! Pretty neat!
In the final stage, when you control Sonic and you defeat Metal Sonic, you embark in a “secret” stage, against Dr. Robotnik. You turn into Super Sonic, and you have 15 SECONDS to defeat Robotnik and escape out of the Death Egg alive!
Again, much like Tails Sky Patrol, it doesn’t have a deep plot, but it doesn’t need to! It's a spin-off! And what a game it was!

This game is a blast, super fun! I never learned how to do the combos, so I would always just press random buttons and beat everyone, but it is super fun nonetheless, and you do get to turn into Super Sonic in the end so we will always take that! Not sure why 8 Chaos Emeralds though, that was weird!
And that makes it the end of the Classic Era! I hope you liked the games here, some great games were left off, but we can't waste time, because we need to move on to the best Sonic games ever!
Welcome to the Green Eyes Era, where we will start with Sonic 4dventure, released in the Dreamcast, but we will talk about that later. With the Classic Era over, and 8 Grand Prix accounted for, lets review the standings!

And it is no surprise to see Shadow up top with 123 points, but maybe the order of the drivers within Shadow can be a bit of a surprise! Onur leads with 66 points, 9 more than his teammate Ahmet, but in 2nd place is someone not from Shadow: it's Xavier, from Tyrrell, with 60 points, 20 more than his teammate Cezary who was probably expecting to be in the top 4 by now, but is being denied by an excellent Jun who is keeping his ground and holding to 4th place with all he can!
We had 4 different winners so far: Cezary, Xavier, Onur and Pedro, with Onur having 4 wins to support him. It's surely being an exciting season so far, but with still 2/3 of it yet to go, it's anyone's game!
And now that we closed off the Classic Era: what did you think of the games? Have you played any of them? Do you want to now? Are you excited for the Green Eyes Era? It's all about to kick off!
