Quote ( Phil Maunder @ August 14th 2018,20:28:34 ) The one an only season he had a team mate who could beat him he got all salty about it then had to leave so for that reason he's nota great This rules out a lot of 'greats' :D

Quote ( Andrew Watson @ August 14th 2018,18:58:20 ) What's your parameters for being 'one of the best ever' if top-20 doesn't qualify?
Someone who makes the right calls....more often than not.

Quote ( Andrew Watson @ August 14th 2018,17:13:44 ) Sad, really, that his career was held back for so long by below par machinery. Best driver of his generation, IMO (but debatable, of course)
Probably the best decision for everyone involved - he should have taken that sabbatical in 2015 rather than wasting another 3+ years in project that was always going to come up short.
In my opinion he's probably the best F1 driver I've ever seen since I started watching, slightly ahead of Hamilton and Schumacher. His 2012 season will go down as one of the best individual performances in history, and one that's quite representative of his career arc as a whole.
A shame that he was also abrasive off track and overly political - it definitely hurt his chances in a top car towards the end.
I think he'll end up with a similar legacy to Jim Clark, where you sort of have to look past the Championships to explain where he really ranks as a driver

Aint not gonna shed a tear he is retiring with millions in his account haha

For selfish reasons I am gutted i win’t see him in the races anymore, one of the best unfortunate not to win more titles

Next season McLaren will be one of the faster teams.. That's just how it works for Alonso.
|

|
I didn't read anywhere that he is retiring. He said he is stepping away from F1. Taking a break and retiring are not the same.
I believe he will be competing in Indy car series next season. If he wins the Indy 500 he may be back in F1 with a new team in 2020. I sure hope this isn't the last season we see him in an F1 car!

|
Get real, he'll only be interested in a top team, but no top team will be interested in him.
|
|
|
He will be back at some point. Consider that he is still under contract with the McLaren group, so beside the foregone conclusion that he'll win the WEC, he could turn up in an orange car at St. Pete for IndyCar (most likely) or pull a Montoya....

|
Alonso is too old to join a team in 2020 Indycar is next Triple crown Then WEC

I do think this is a safe move for Sainz. Apart from Renault, McLaren are the only likely team to build a package that can get into and stay in the top 5. And considering they practically stopped development on this year's car in favour of next year's, and they've even used practice sessions this year to test things for next year, the near future could be much better for them.

Wrong team changes cost him 4-5 F1 Championship Bad luck or bad move ?

I would've liked for him to have one more shot at a winning team, but I hope he can pursue his triple crown now.

Well, for someone who attends the Indy 500 regularly, I came out a winner yesterday...
In all likelihood, I still think he isn't done with F1 just yet. People citing his age forget that this is a guy who eats sleeps and breathes staying at the peak of his abilities just to drive a car as fast as possible. Plus, we just watched Scott Dixon, one of the oldest IndyCar drivers on the grid be the most sought after talent on the grid. So as far as I'm concerned, I would expect Alonso back on an F1 grid, even if he has to wait until 2021 for that to happen.
Yesterday really wasn't too surprising, but the real news was that McLaren remained "Team Alonso."
I'd even bet he hand picks who sits in his seat next year. Which bodes well for Sainz's 2019 hopes.

Season is in the final straight. Alonso´s career has been long and it maybe continues in Indy Car. Only 4 races remaining and Alonso´s over 300 GP´s ends. I can find a new favourite driver to F1.. or watch more IndyCar races in TV.
I remember also Minardi´s and Renault´´s good days.. Alonso made miracles from there and in many other teams.

Instead of making a new thread, I'll post here.
Alonso has announced that he is leaving the WEC at season end, his seat to be filled by Brendon Hartley.
Would this be Alonso freeing up time to race Indy all 2020?

That confirms he will be at the 500 (something which was known previously), but doesn't say whether he will be back in 2020 for the whole season.
