Are you qualifying with too much fuel?

I thought that may be the problem but wasn't sure it if effects the qualifying time

would you suggest lower fuel to start with?

do not lower because bad Q2, when you driver become better time difference will be smaller

Dale,
Make sure you are tracking how much fuel you use in your races so you can figure out fuel consumption. You can then use this with the number of pit stops you want to do to figure out the correct amount of fuel. Just don't try to cut it too finely or you'll end up with an extra pitstop.

Having a slower Q2 is quite natural because you add fuel that you do not have in Q1.

Also, bear in mind that the setups of Q1 and Q2 may be different due to the weather differences between the two qualifying sessions, which also has significance in your qualifying times.

No, I don't. Start fuel is a strategic choice you make taking into account tyre compound together with pits number and frequency. Changing start fuel to improve Q2 times might ruin your race strategy most of the times.

Besides the normal Q1 vs Q2 differences (caused mainly by driver skills, very noticeable at rookie), you need to weather adjust Q2 setup, which is what Tibor pointed out. And qualy risk too.

It's probably worth noting that the setup effect is negligible at this level. We are talking about a Q1-Q2 delta of 5 seconds; the contribution of setup is probably at most 5% of that.

It's indeed the added fuel combined with driver skills. Some drivers handle it better than others. But Flo has given you the right advice - decide your Q2 fuel based on race strategy, not on qualifying performance.

Or the other way around - if you really want to start in front, base your strategy on a low fuel start and fit the right tyre for it.

Qualifying risks can cause that gap in lap times. That is something you should look at by using lower risks and then up the risk next race. The change should show you what risks the driver can handle. It may take a couple of races to get it right.

A change in the temperature will require an adjustment to the set up.
