Kurtis Kraft reaches out to other teams in engine contract negotiations

After a very successful season, winning both the driver's and constructor's trophy, the American team has announced that they wouldn't mind partnering with other teams for next year's engine development for perhaps the very first collaboration project.

Manager Constantin Heller didn't seem to want to reveal too much information in our interview, but described the project as "pooling their collective resources in a joint effort towards a universal and affordable engine". They are once more extending their hands to not only previous customers like Bugatti, but the German also specifically called out other teams that might be considering to develop their own engine.

"It's pretty easy, if they decide to make a deal with us, we may both end up with an overall stronger engine, and we also have the highest engine priority for next season. I think all sides of the deal can benefit here." Said deals are set to be handled on a case-by-case basis depending on what interested customers expect of their engines.

For now, the Kurtis Kraft team is waiting for other teams to contact them during their transition to the 1963 season, including the transfer of this year's champion Edgar Barth for Cooper's wet weather pro Roy Salvadori.

Bugatti willing to partner with Kurtis Kraft for 1963

A subpar season for Bugatti in 1962 following another bad performance by Luigi Musso, led manager Davi Queiroz to question the team's current off-season decisions regarding the engine selecion.

One of the main concerns for the team is being a priority on the partnership. "We made a pretty glaring mistake this season in relation to our engine. Our collaboration efforts were lacking at best, so no Engine Manufacturer had a layout that fitted our plans", said the Brazilian. That resulted in a last-second attempt to repair the situation, and the French team ended up partnering with Cooper. However, that proved to be a poor choice for them.

After Heller's public invitation, citing Bugatti as a potential ally, Davi Queiroz has declared that the team is inclined to make a deal with Kurtis Kraft: "Yeah, that possibility has crossed our minds; we'll see what they can offer us in the off-season."

Formula Generally's longest season has finally ended yesterday with the 11th and last race in Watkins Glen. Although it wasn't absolutely certain, everyone knew that Edgar Barth would secure his second title sooner or later. The real question of the weekend was whether Mercedes can keep his zero-point lead (Mercedes had 3 wins to Kurtis' 1) over Kurtis Kraft or the Americans would take both titles of 1962. Luigi Musso's 6th best car was the main victim of the Heats, as Surtees battled the two Kurtis Krafts in Group B (Brandon did not qualify). Surtees beat them both, but both Godia and Barth made it through, 2 points to 1, advantage Kurtis Kraft. Barth lost his Round of 24 heat, while Surtees battled Godia. The Mercedes, already overachieving by making it this far, got a surprise second place and secured his place in the Final 16. Godia had to finish third to keep their one point lead, and in the last lap he managed to secure the position by less than two tenths. Kurtis Kraft outscored Mercedes by one single point and won their third Constructors' Title.

The rest of the race featured some Alfa Romeo domination, especially after Peter Collins, their main rival was eliminated in the Quarterfinals. Phil Hill overachieved for Centro Sud, Piotti, Clark and Behra got one last Semi-Final in for this season. The Final turned out to be another Alfa battle, with Goldsmith winning the United States GP again, following England's win in Italy, again. Andy Linden finished third, scoring his first podium since 1957, ahead of Fritz d'Orey, who made it all the way through to a surprise fourth place, thanks to some luck but mostly fate.

And with that, Edgar Barth is the 1962 Formula Generally Champion, ending the season on a record 37 points. His keys to success were an early win in Australia, three other podium finishes, and two Qualifying victories in the second half of the season. His consistent good finishes made the difference over Eric Brandon, second place finisher this year and only the second person to win three FGen races in the same year. That feat earned Whitehead a dominant title all the way back in 1951, but not now. He still finishes ahead of third place Jean Behra by five points, who was amazingly consistent, scoring eight times, made it to 7 Quarterfinals, scored two podiums but just couldn't win a race.

It's just like last year for Alfa Romeo, Paul England scored 17 points in the last two races to make an surge from outside the Top 25 up to fourth place. Peter Whitehead just cannot stop winning, he keeps setting records, he's now up to 12 wins and 23 podiums with his 6th Top 5 finish. Innes Ireland now has three consecutive Top 12 finishes, won another race and scored 26 points in one season, the Gordini driver will be a force to be reckoned with next year. Carroll Shelby got five Semi-Finals in six races in the middle of the season, earning him another solid Top 10, his third in four years. Paul Goldsmith's last race win moved him fro 23rd to 8th place, ahead of Trevor Taylor, Fangio's replacement, who did more than fine in his rookie year.

No driver has ever scored 22 points for Talbot-Lago, Mexico's first ever driver, Ricardo Rodríguez did it in his second season thanks to three Finals. P11 and P12 are another two overachievers, Tony Maggs won his first race in Belgium, Luigi Piotti in South Africa, ERA won another race after 1950. Next up are the two BRMs, both finishing with 20 points, but while McLaren is the future, Marimón has been declared the past and is leaving the British team after 10 full seasons. Andy Linden of CSI rounds off the Top 15, after scoring two Finals in a row and 11 points to finish the season. Surtees was overshadowed by his teammate but 20 points and P16 is far from bad, which is also the total of Scarab's Maurice Trintignant, winner of the Étancelin Trophy.

P18 is for Fritz d'Orey and his six Quarterfinals, the last person to overtake Paco Godia, in theory the first driver at Kurtis Kraft, but very much a second fiddle this year. Don Freeland also finished far behind his teammate, the Gordini battle was settled when Ireland beat the American in a 1-2 finish in Monaco. Peter Collins' long and interesting career takes another turn as after a 21st place he's about to leave Maserati, will he find his sixth team for 1963? They missed the first two races but that didn't stop the two Ecurie Belge drivers to have a better than average season, scoring 15 and 14 points, and Ferrari's Castellotti finishing between the two of them for 23rd.

Jackie Lewis was the more consistent Tec-Mec, scoring seven times and finishing 25th, ahead of Stuart Lewis-Evans, who managed to score an impressive eight times in a row this year. Jim Clark had three Semi-Finals but only 13 points in total, but he's managed to beat five other drivers on countback. Bandini's only fourth place came in South Africa, Lederle got that in Spa. Vaccarella finished 30th in his rookie year, ahead of veteran Ruttman in the rookie Centro Sud. Salvadori makes his move to the champions after a 32nd place finish, Siffert qualified only four times but got an average of 3 points there. Both Porsches were good at scoring, but not scoring well enough, only one Semi-Final for Perdisa this year. Phil and Graham hill finished next to each other with 11 and 10 points, Bonnier will move to Maserati after a P38, Musso had nothing going besides an Australian podium. Bianchi got 40th but scored five times in a row, Baghetti won a Qualifying but scored just six more points, Stacey had three Quarterfinals and nothing more, and Alfonso de Portago rounds off the Drivers' Championship.

As Alta's first of three titles was unofficial, Kurtis Kraft becomes the first team to win three Constructors' Titles. They beat Mercedes with just one win, while the Germans got three of them. Just one point made the difference, otherwise Mercedes would have been the new champions. Alfa Romeo couldn't have won this year, even with two 1-2 finishes, but the Italians finished the season very well once again and made it to third in the standings.

Alta couldn't defend their title this year as Fangio retired and a rookie took his place, and fourth place is far from perfect, they finished just six points behind Kurtis Kraft. After the four top teams, four teams can be considered top of the midfield, finishing on 42-38 points. Gordini had a quiet season but a 1-2 finish and two other Finals ensured they would finish Top 5 again. Cooper's second season back as Constructors went even better, crossing 30 and 40 points in a season for a first time, their best ever finish in the Constructors'. It's another seventh place for BRM, the team with the highest Budget for now. Ferrari finished 8th, good recovery from the team after a disastrous 1961 campaign.

33 points were enough for a great 9th place, and a three-way tie was broken in favor of Lancia, 1962 was their most successful season point-wise. The best story is definitely ERA's however: they won their second race 107 races after their first one, which allowed them to finish in the Top 10 of the Constructors' for the very first time. 33 points and 11th place it is for CSI, their best finish since 1958. Talbot-Lago got 12th, not as good as P8 last year but they are about to double their Mexican work force so nothing to worry about there. Ecurie Belge got 13th despite missing the first two races, their fourth consecutive year of improving their Constructors' position.

Bugatti got more points and more Finals than last year but dropped two places, they finish just ahead of Tec-Mec, who came so close to scoring their first podium in their fourth year. Porsche got 24 points for the second time in their career, but only 16th place this time for the Stuttgart team. Centro Sud's 17th place makes them easier to overachieve in their sophomore year, Aston Martin may have finished 18th but their point streaks may help them a lot next year. This wasn't a good season for Enrico Platé but they never have two bad years in a row, while returning Ecurie France finishes 20th, with lots to do before they get their third title.

Three teams entered this year's Étancelin Trophy, Scarab and Maserati both had a decent midfield-like season, Trintignant beat Collins 20-16, as Connaught finished third this year.

Congratulations to
Edgar Barth (team: Kurtis Kraft, manager: Constantin Heller) on winning the 1962 Drivers' Championship,
Kurtis Kraft (manager: Constantin Heller) on winning the 1962 Constructors' Championship,
Scarab (manager: Rocco Stallone) on winning the 1962 Étancelin Trophy.

Ferrari not willing to partner Kurtis Kraft!

This season has been a good recovery season for Ferrari.
Whilest it is secretly working on their brand new Engine concept for 1963.
Looking to claim back the title of best Engine supplier of the field!
Some say it might be named ''Delta Intergrale''

The 1963 Ferrari engine will follow the same concept, as their last build engine, at the time for Avonn tyres, this time their engine will be perfectly matching the needs of the Fireston tyres.

The 1963 Ferrari engine will follow the same basic concept as their previous prize winning engines.
This mean that Ferrari and Firestone are working closely togther to create the best possible engine to suit the Firestone tyres!!!
Whilest keeping it affordable for all teams!!!

Copper happy with best ever results, smug about beating Ecurie France

IBM Cooper Cars today celebrated as they achieved their best ever results in FGen history - 6th in the Constructors' Championship with Jean Behra finishing 3rd in the Drivers' Championship. Whilst one podium short of their target of 3 this season, the team can surely be happy with their results this season and the increased budget they will likely have for 1963, excluding gains found through car development.

Team Principal Joshua Anderson was said to be "extraordinarily happy" with Jean Behra's 3rd place, which guarantees him entry into the 1963 Race of Champions alongside his new teammate and reigning champion Edgar Barth. Barth will head into the 1963 season with a 60 rating, with Behra expected to have a 55 rating. Both drivers have a chance to improve this in the Race of Champions.

Anderson was also visibly smug at the team's thrashing of Ecurie France in the teams' standings, the ailing French outfit finishing last after paying team principal Jaelan Smith way too much, exactly as a previous edition of this newspaper reported at the start of the season. On the topic, Anderson was quoted as saying "I told you so, lel."

No mention of engine development plans was made at the conference, though the team have refused to rule out this possibility, although they did aim criticism at Bugatti for claiming their choice of Cooper engines this year was "a poor choice", with Anderson firmly stating "Our engines were fine, thank you very much, just look at what we did with them."

This unbiased and completely factual article was brought to you by IBM Cooper Cars News Co. We will continue to furnish the latest unbiased, factually correct and interesting news as it develops.

A driver's Talent changed in relation to:
- the amount of wins, podiums, Qualifying wins, Track Records they scored,
- the longest consecutive point streak they scored,
- their final championship position,
- their Age (they lost 1 Talent if they turned 48 in the new year),
- their Motivation (if they dipped below a 20 or 10),
- their NC-race participation.

IMPORTANT: Due to errors in Talent calculations, drivers lost 0.5 Talent after the 1960 and 1961 seasons if their Talent weren't integers at the time. As compensation, these drivers are given back 0.5 or 1 Talent at the end of this season, depending whether they lost 0.5 Talent once or twice. Although it was an oversight worth 0.5 Talent (twice), it still effected several drivers. I apologize for the inconvenience.

A driver's Wet skill changed in relation to their NC-race participation (but there were no wet NC-races).
A driver's motivation changed in relation to the amount of positions they won/lost between the last two years.
Driver Experience is updated.
Driver Salary is updated.

Independents, drivers without a contract gained/lost 0-3 Talent between seasons. Their Motivation stays the same.

All major CP changes can be found below. CP can be gained or lost for position, rank related to last year, and rank related to their budget. Those who failed their sponsor goal are also penalized. Non-Championship results are also included.

I think it's worth mentioning in a separate post, even though the news broke last night when the 1963 Drivers Sheet was updated:

Peter Whitehead has decided to retire at the end of the 1963 season.

Assuming he drives the full 1963 season for Alta, the three-time champion will have driven 139 races at the time of retirement, with at least 118 starts, 12 wins, 23 podiums and 276 points as of now. He won his three titles in 1950, 1951 and 1953, and even though he's been title-less for the last 9 full seasons, he still managed to score five wins, two championship bronze medals and six Top 10 finishes, as he kept reaching new heights which won't be beaten soon.

For the record, drivers aged 47 and above have an increasing chance of retiring at the end of the season, always drawn when the new sheet is updated. Whitehead has a 30% chance of retiring, while Bettenhausen had 10%, Piotti 40% but the latter two will carry on after 1963.

Note that five drivers lost an additional 3 Talent after 1962 due to low Motivation, this has only been added now (for Godia, Bettenhausen, Bonnier, Musso and de Portago).

Reminders will now be sent to the five managers who haven't confirmed their driver(s) and/or tire supplier yet. You will not receive reminders about the optional moves of Confirmation, such as:

- Changing teams
- Additional driver/tire changes (breaking already confirmed contracts)
- Changing driver slots (switch between Privateer and Constructor)

Developments of the off-season so far:
