Quote ( Ibrahim Akhtar @ November 22nd 2022,20:36:43 ) Yes but Maguire was playing really well in the game. I mean, one assist, hi the woodwork, and should have gained a penalty if the ref was fair. What more do you ask from a defender?
Defending better vs the 1st Iran goal? :P

Who knew that all we needed for Asian nations to become OP was for an Asian country to host the WC? :P

They've offered him partial ownership of the franchise if he plays half a season with them next year is what I heard.

merely a technicality, I will not just get into an argument over this, but instead of going all baby temper tantrum I just state it was better before, when the referee didn't have to have 20 staff members analyzing every play.
Congrats to those already on the next round..

It depends on what people want.
Maybe it has taken away from of the dynamic of football games by introducing long stops and stopping the flow of the game, but VAR usually ends up with correct calls, despite people's beliefs that otherwise occurs.
From a competitive standpoint, VAR was an excellent addition which helps to the fairness of games. What lacks is transparency in its usage.
Regarding today's penalty, the hand did not go there through a natural body movement (as you said, it was for the player to land, so you can argue it was a "decision" (albeit instinctive of course)) and it increased his natural volume when blocking the ball, which according to the IFAB is an infraction and results in a penalty in that situation.
The penalty was correctly awarded.
Not that it made much difference, we were winning anyways and frankly, we richly deserved that win! Very happy we're in the Round of 16!

Fair enough, but if you look at the Portugal v Uruguay video again, you'll probably find that the situation the defender finds himself in is different than the one in the picture.
For instance that looks like a slide tackle (in the picture, correct me if wrong) while the Uruguay player threw himself to the ground to stop the shot (and part of that throwing himself down in included that hand behind his body)
And I know the rules, after all I quoted them for you in the post you conveniently partial quoted ;)
And yes, I'm definitly biased for Portugal here before you ask. Deal with it :P

We were on the verge of witnessing something spectacular! :P

Well at least it's not a WC where everyone tries and Germany wins ;)
(Sorry my truely lovely neighbours; lived in/around both Hamburg, Stuttgart and Munich for a while , would go back anyday...(!) Aber Sie wissen, wenn es um Fußball geht... Bin ich nur ein Holländer; eine überholende Karawane :P )

In the past football was easy. Play 90 minutes and in the end Germany wins. Now the play time is random, and Germany doesn't win.

Sad for Uruguay
EDIT: Well, 2-0 another American team in 16th..

I like how Spain may well end up playing against the 3 countries that arguably neighbour them most closely (vs Morocco in R16, probs vs Portugal in QF and probs vs France in SF!) :)

Well, Morocco aren't European...and the Dutch are pretty strong, as are the English. But yeah much of the stronger European teams are in that part of the draw.
