With Gilbert once again back for the Sunday, but Respati and Jundt mysteriously vanishing just before entire for qualifying are taken, all drivers who enter the Endurance are guaranteed to score points, which could easily be crucial for the championship standings come the end of the season, as this is easily one of the closest FAE1 fields at the front.
Speaking of which, Swaney once again dominated practice and firmly placed the Brabham in pole position. However, in a rare event, the other spot on the front row is not occupied by Cucciardi. Bassett, in one of those moments (which are decidedly rare this season) where everything seems to be working fine in Hound World, coaxed the Red Bull all the way to second on the grid. The other Brabham of Ali takes third, with Tipple seemingly back into his stride taking fourth. Karda lines up in fifth, with Cucciardi all the way back in sixth following a half spin on his last lap.
As the lights dim, unlike in the Feature, the entire grid gets away smoothly, and filters through the first few corners in the same order. The only blip occurs around Turn Thirteen. As the enter the bend, Gilbert briefly clips the kerb and drifts wide of his usual line, prompting Kingsley to try and overtake. However, the Canadian applies too much throttle too soon, and neatly spins out. Without missing a beat, the McLaren driver completes the full circle and rejoins a little behind the pack.
However, this peace is broken by the arrival of light rain midway through Lap Five, and the teams are all receiving conflicting information. Believing that a storm is imminent, Tyrrell bring Karda into the pits, preparing to bring Khanna in on the next lap. Unfortunately for the Czech, the rain stops as quickly as it arrives, and he is waved through the pits having lost twenty seconds.
This leaves part of the circuit bone dry while others, most notably the complex leading onto the back straight, mildly damp, though the moisture is clearing quickly. However, it doesn’t clear quickly enough for Ali as he attempts to pass Bassett on the entrance to Turn Seven. The Englishman spots his compatriot make a mistake on the exit of Turn Five, and moves to the outside line to switch back onto the main straight. However, this happens to be the dampest part of the track, and the Brabham slithers wide despite Ali’s corrective measures. Bassett, despite his win at Birmingham in such conditions, is also affected as he moves slightly offline to defend against the Brabham. The Privateer manages to stay on track, but he allows both Tipple and Cucciardi to slip past.
A few laps after the rain passes, and the track has mostly dried out, Kinglsey pulls into the pits with a terminal hydraulics leak. This not only consigns him to a single point, but is also his first failure to finish. His team-mate isn’t faring much better. Having survived the actual rain without so much as a power-slide, and even managing to nip past Khanna as the Tyrrell driver was busy discussing the rapidly changing tactics during the shower, the Englishman momentarily rides the kerb on the exit of Turn Seven with the rear tyre. This is enough for the rubber to lose traction, sending the McLaren into a spin before it is neatly collected by Khanna. The damage is minor, though, and both cars are able to pit for speedy repairs.
However, this cannot be said of the accident that befalls Ho and Gibbons towards the end of the stint. Heading down into Turn Eight, far away from the remaining damp kerbs, Ho pulls out of the American’s slipstream as they enter the braking zone. As the Monteverdi-Onyx draws alongside, a huge plume of dust shoots out of the left wheel, appearing to accelerate the car which then pulls to the right. With the right wheel now locked and barely any braking power, the Hongkonger is unable to change course as the car slams into the March’s sidepod. The cars tangle and spin onto the runoff as a rear wheel shoots into the barriers. Eventually, the machines come to a rest, and the drivers are able to make it back to the pits despite the massive damage to the March’s sidepods and the near-destruction of the Monetevrdi-Onyx’s front suspension. One lap later, Bassett also pulls into the pits, though his stay is more permanent with the fog billowing from his engine.
After the first stops, during which the Mach One Racing crew fumble with one of the front wheels, the race seems to calm down massively, especially at the front. Despite the proximity of Swaney and the two Penskes, being less than two seconds away, the best that Tipple can do is shadow the Brabham as he seemingly cannot quite get close enough to overtake.
However, further back, Khanna and Hawkins play out a comedy of errors in their bid to make sure that the other takes seventh place. It starts immediately after the first stop, when the Tyrrell driver locks up on the entrance to Turn Thirteen and spins out. However, his attempts to rejoin the circuit in the correct direction take so long that Hawkins is able to slip past.
Next it’s the McLaren driver’s turn, and he chooses his moment during the final refuelling window. Entering his pitbox, either he forgets to brake or simply does so too late, and overshoots. After almost fifteen seconds the pitstop finally begins, but Khanna is back in seventh by this point. During the same stop, Ali does something that blows both of these out of the water: spinning on the entrance to the pitlane. Admittedly, the Englishman is pushing to try and pass Gilbert during his stop, but that doesn’t excuse him losing control on the looping curve to the garages and dislodging his rear-wing on the wall.
He manages to repair the damage, and rejoins the race as it winds its way to a close with little drama. Ho almost provides an outlet to prevent this, but the gouts of flame that shoot from the rear of his Monteverdi-Onyx, while more spectacular than the typical electrical problem, are extinguished easily by the marshals.
So Swaney takes the victory after another dominant drive, during which he never placed a wheel wrongly or allowed Tipple a chance to get past. Not that the Englishman didn’t try, and he fully deserves a second place to mark his return to the front of the grid. Cucciardi’s uncharacteristic mistake in qualifying has probably cost him the lead in the championship, as has not sharing the Fastest Lap with Swaney, but a podium is a fine result nonetheless. Gilbert finishes a rather anonymous race in fourth, while Karda drops back on the last lap but still manages to collect fifth. The same problem, absence of fuel, drops Khanna to eighth, while Ali collects another sixth place after a silly mistake.

The battle for the championship intensifies as Swaney takes the helm for the first time this year following two dominant performances in the Feature and Endurance. Cucciardi, having momentarily stepped off the podium, slots into second just five points behind. In years past, a clear favourite for the title has emerged by the time one third of the races have passed, but for once it is completely open as to who could win it. A slightly muted Endurance from Karda halts a run of podiums and drops the Czech just a little too far back to be counted as a third title protagonist, while Khanna continues to silence his critics and makes his fourth place very comfortable. A pair of sixths sees Ali past Jundt, who had only one race, for fifth just as Gilbert overtakes the both of them, and the trio are covered by eight points in the upper midfield. Gibbons’ solid performances allow the American to close on Kingsley as the Canadian’s weekend tapered badly, while Hawkins remains in the final top-ten spot. Tipple’s first podium since his return vaults him three places up the order, just six away from the McLaren driver, while Bassett’s ‘start-and-park’-esque routine gives him enough points to pass Respati for twelfth. The last driver to race in Hungary is Ho, whose results have taken a significant downturn after his podium in Finland.

After the Saturday races, Tyrrell had taken the lead in the championship, leading Brabham by a reasonable margin of four points. However, a combination of bad luck and almost frivolous mistakes have put the Tyrrells back into second, and a frankly masterful Endurance Race from Swaney, plus two decent races from Ali, have managed to extend Brabham’s lead. Penske have equalled the leader’s score from the Hungarian races, but with a deficit of thirty-two points that has not decreased much at all since Tipple resumed racing, it seems that a considerable improvement in pace will be needed to claw back the gap. However, their third place seems very secure, with almost one hundred points back to McLaren in fourth, who have retaken the place from Monteverdi-Onyx after a less-than-stellar weekend from the Swiss team. Mach One Racing remain a lonely sixth and while March are still scoring decent points, any progress is largely being hindered by Gibbons being their sole driver. Hound Racing take back eighth from Autobacs Racing Team Aguri, taking advantage of low turnout to score in all three races despite two failures to finish. Marcos Monsters continue to close out the top ten, as the last four teams failed to arrive at the Balatonring.

As in the Teams Championship, Tyrrell had briefly took the lead in the Enzo Ferrari Trophy with a three point advantage over Brabham after the Feature. But, with a decidedly modest effort in the Endurance and another dominant Endurance from Swaney, Brabham have retaken the advantage and have actually extended it over last weekend’s. Penske remain in a comfortable third, and have matched the Aussies point-for-point. However, with the large gap between them and the leading two teams being virtually undiminished, it seems that Penske will remain an outside chance at the Trophy for now. With a decent weekend from the Woking team, and a frankly poor follow-up to their Ahvenisto form from the Swiss quad, the gap between McLaren and Monteverdi-Onyx has returned with a vengeance. March continue their run of solid results, and have managed to slightly close the gap between themselves and Monteverdi-Onyx, but without a second driver a good deal of their potential remains locked away. And without a driver at all, Fondmetal are in serious danger of having their entry revoked.

With two more victories in the category Mach One Racing continue to lead the JLC comfortably after the Hungarian rounds. However, Hound Racing have outscored the Belgians by a full eight points over the three races, and could quite conceivably challenge the double-champions for the Cup, although it should be noted that the English team only made the finish once out of their three attempts, and the main factor in the high points tally is the lack of Independent entries. Meanwhile, by virtue of actually arriving, Autobacs Racing Team Aguri have passed Marcos Monsters for third, and are the last of the three Independent Teams to race at the Balatonring.
