Unofficial Meeting - Nottingham - Friday 18th June to Sunday 20th June 2021

Day 1

Friday went really well. It was just myself and Jonathan Beagles. Day started off a bit rough for JB. I was about to leave my house to go Nottingham Train Station to pick him up from there at around 15:00, where JB gave me a call and told me that his train got cancelled. My initial thoughts were that this weekend is over, no unofficial meeting to attend. Luckily, there were other trains that went to Nottingham and he took the next one from Crewe to Nottingham which made him 30 mins late. That gave me a nice window to drive up (in torrential rain) and collect him from the train station. From there, we go straight to the house (which had awful beds) and ordered the alcohol through Uber Eats. JB got some beers from a local corner shop at a priority delivery time, while I ordered the bulk of the alcohol plus the ingredients for a great English breakfast fry up through Asda at a slower rate. Day got worse when the delivery which was meant to deliver our beer didn't know where the house was, and when delivered, there were no beers in sight. Turns out they cancelled the order without us knowing about it! The Asda delivery arrived with cider and a whole bottle of whiskey, and we chilled and relaxed watching the rest of the Euro 2020 games that night, including a very boring England vs Scotland game. We also ordered a Chinese takeaway, which was pretty good. The night finished off with a few rounds of "The Muffin Game" card game and a few rounds of "Who am I", where you guess celebrities or characters or things that are on your card, which is perched on your glasses that you cannot see.

Day 2

Saturday started with a lovely fry-up breakfast cooked by yours truly, and we waited for Chew Kai Wen to turn up at around 11:00. When he arrived at the house, we drove straight to our first destination, Tenpin Bowling, where we had 2 intense games of bowling.

Firstly, me and Chew had no idea where JB went, because for the next two bowling games, we were playing alongside someone called "Jan". Nevertheless, "Jan" looked like JB, so we went along with it. Secondly, the barriers did not go down, so we had to play with them up which meant virtually no gutterballs. This bit of information will prove useful later on in the story. :)

So, Game 1 of the bowling. Everyone started off playing a bit shaky, with myself being the highest scorer with 6. "Jan" then came out of nowhere and scored a strike in the next bowl, forcing me and Kai to worry about what to come. The next few bowls are steady, with "Jan" still in the lead. Then came the turning point on the 8th round. I manage to get a spare off my bowl, which placed a lot of pressure on "Jan's" ability in the 9th round, and oh my what a calamity "Jan" had in that round, scoring a "Jun Ball" on the first bowl and finishing with a 4 to put me within a scoring chance to take the lead. And I take that with pride, smashing in a strike and finishing with 120 points in the end while "Jan" scored only 104. Kai was last with 90, but the drama didn't end there!

https://i.imgur.com/oW6grjD.jpg

Game 2 of the bowling was even more intense. "Jan" felt really out of place and so struggled throughout the final game, which left the battle for 1st between the DAs. Kai took a huge lead going into the 8th round, but that is where I shine. I place immense pressure on Kai by bowling strikes on the 8th and the 9th round, forcing Kai to score huge points to prevent losing the 2nd game to me. Bowling in the 10th, I was in prime position to win the whole thing. I step up, and bowled a beautiful spare leaving me to score just 8 more pins to win. The crowd holds their breath. The comeback of a lifetime nearly complete. I step up for my final bowl, and my natural bowling side comes out and scores a "Jun Ball"! I fall onto my knees, with Kai needing just 7 pins to beat me. He scores exactly seven in the next bowl, and takes a spare (his 8th in that game!) to comfortably beat me and "Jan".

After the bowling, we found JB and we played some pool and there was a racing match between Kai and JB (which Kai won by 0.2s). We then drove back to the house, played a couple of rounds of "The Muffin Game" before our Uber took us out to HUDDL. In there, we watched arguably the best Euros game this year, with Portugal winning 4-2 against Germany (even though the scoreline says otherwise). After that, there was a struggle finding another bar, and I felt a little whoosy, so we headed back home where the next 4 hours were filled with the whiskey and a little app called "Lucky Voice". Lucky Voice is a karaoke website that JB has access to, and we sang so many songs. JB chose the lyrically difficult songs as per usual, as I perfected my falsetto and Chew hits us with some ballads that made me and JB cry. This all ended with JB being pretty drunk and singing the whole of "My Shot" from Hamilton as well as "Alphabet Aerobics", which he kinda nailed (pretty impressed considering he was drunk as hell!)

The night ends with me driving Kai back home, and JB telling me (adamantly) that there was someone called Denise in his room. I said that he was mad, and we all went to sleep.

Day 3

Sunday started with a groggy JB. Clearly hungover, he spewed a couple of times in the toilet, while Kai and I cooked breakfast for his pool little soul :) We had a really relaxing morning, topped with JB actually nailing "Alphabet Aerobics" without the need of lyrics on a screen! We left the house, before we drove up to The Three Crowns to watch Max Verstappen slap Lewis Hamilton in the French GP. Food was pretty good there too. We then parted ways with myself dropping JB off at the train station, and Kai back at his home.

Overall, it was only three people in the meeting, but this was still a very enjoyable weekend, and one that other people should experience!! :)

You conveniently missed out the picture of the scoreboard hiding the fact that I made 4 spares in a row ;)

Was an awesome 2 days @Jun Ho (P18) @Jonathan Beagles (P20), really fun to have a chill weekend with the 2 of you. Looking forward to the next meetup already, hope we can have a fun go-karting session as well!

Lol Muffin Time mate :)

And your spares in that 2nd game were impressive Kai! It's just a pity I wasn't around for the bowling - that Jan guy sucked :P

Great weekend gents - really good fun. Jun's rendition of Kiss from a Rose by Seal will haunt me forever :D

@James Hitchen (M4) He was clearly thinking of you while he sang it :P

So, is anyone up for a late January meet-up in the UK (barring any decisions from BoJo)?

@Jonathan Beagles (A11) @James Hitchen (P4) @Chew Kai Wen (E) and any others? It will be in the North this time :)

I've got a dissertation presentation sometime in january and have quite a bit on with the race team start up business but assuming its not too far away and at a quiet patch i'll make it. :)

Only weekend I could do in Jan would be 14th-16th - does it maybe make more sense to look at e.g. May sort of time, as we'd have more time to get people involved and it likely opens up diaries a bit more (I could do 6th-8th or 27th-29th then), plus there would be an F1 race on and less likelihood of COVID impacting things?

Well surely you want an F1 race included in the weekend? If so your options from Christmas until May are:

1 Bahrain Grand Prix Bahrain Bahrain International Circuit, Sakhir 20 March
2 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix Saudi Arabia Jeddah Corniche Circuit, Jeddah 27 March
3 Australian Grand Prix Australia Albert Park Circuit, Melbourne 10 April*
4 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix[e] Italy Imola Circuit, Imola 24 April
5 Miami Grand Prix United States Miami International Autodrome, Miami Gardens, Florida[f] 8 May*
6 Spanish Grand Prix Spain Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Montmeló 22 May
7 Monaco Grand Prix Monaco Circuit de Monaco, Monaco 29 May*

* = a weekend that I could do. I'm not the most important person in these meetings by any stretch, but I have been 1/4 and 1/3 of the total attendees for the last 2! :P

Fair enough. I just wanted to see everyone again lol so I didn't really cater for F1 :P

Best case would be to have the weekend on 29th May, cos the Champions League Final is on the 28th :)

Yep the weekend of 27th-29th May including the Champions League Final and Monaco GP would be very cool; maybe go to a Casino to get in the mood lol :P

Also Indy 500 that same day...though I suspect that may be tougher to include given the US timings of that!

We can watch that in the Airbnb that I will inevitably book :P casino might show it too :D

Its a week after i finish, although I'll be running an entry in the 24 hours of silverstone the week before so might be crying about a written off car. At the minute I'm free then and could work well, should be able to travel out of the north too with not having to be anywhere the monday after
