Do you wonder what the words to your opponents' national anthems are? I do! I especially wonder what they are after someone beats me race after race. I was thinking it would be interesting to have a three-time winner (any time during the season) post the lyrics (words) to their national anthem, at least locally, to their group. I did it in A-67 just now (because I'm bragging), but I really am interested in the lyrics of others' anthems, especially because they are played out loud on my computer at work, even when I am not at my desk to mute the sound! lol (and because I am American, races end during the workday, so imagine the guy in the cube next to me listening to the Brazilian National Anthem, lol). Would other GPROers think it would be cool to post lyrics of 3-time winners to local forums?

hahah
all the anthems must be a mix of nationalism, romantism and weird ancient words.
get the brazilian, sheri (there are 1000 old words from the extremely - even sickeningly - rich portuguese vocabulary that can't match with any english word, so i brought synonyms):
They heard from the peaceful banks of the Ipiranga (a river) Of a heroic people their resounding cry And the sun of freedom , in bright rays , Shone in the sky of the motherland at that moment . If the promise of equality We conquer with a strong arm , In thy bosom , O freedom, Our hearts will defy death itself! O beloved homeland , idolized , Save ! Save ! Brazil , an intense dream , a vivid ray Of love and hope descends to earth If in thy lovely , smiling and clear sky The image of the cross shines . Giant by nature , You are beautiful, strong and intrepid colossus, And your future mirrors this . Beloved land , Among a thousand others Art thou , Brazil , O beloved homeland ! Of the sons of this soil are gentle mother , Fatherland , Brazil !
Eternally lain on a splendid cradle , At the sound of the sea and the light of heaven , Shine, O Brazil , garland of America , Illuminated by the sun of the new world ! More than the most attractive land Your smiling , lovely fields have more flowers ; " Our forests have more life " " Our life " in your "more love ". O beloved homeland , idolized , Save ! Save ! Brazil , of eternal love be the symbol The banner you display is starry, And may the green - gold flag proclaim - Peace in the future and glory in the past . But if you raise of the justice the strong gavel , You will see that your son does not run from a fight , Nor fears who loves thee until death itself . beloved land Among a thousand others Art thou , Brazil , O beloved homeland ! Of the sons of this soil are gentle mother , homeland brazil!
(I

Australian National Anthem - In Ceremonies it is generally only the 1st verse that is played. It is very rare that the entire anthem is played.
"Advance Australia Fair"
Verse One
Australians all let us rejoice, For we are young and free; We've golden soil and wealth for toil, Our home is girt by sea; Our land abounds in Nature's gifts Of beauty rich and rare; In history's page, let every stage Advance Australia fair! In joyful strains then let us sing, "Advance Australia fair!"
Verse Two
When gallant Cook from Albion sail'd, To trace wide oceans o'er, True British courage bore him on, Till he landed on our shore. Then here he raised Old England's flag, The standard of the brave; With all her faults we love her still, "Brittannia rules the wave!" In joyful strains then let us sing "Advance Australia fair!"
Verse Three
Beneath our radiant southern Cross, We'll toil with hearts and hands; To make this Commonwealth of ours Renowned of all the lands; For those who've come across the seas We've boundless plains to share; With courage let us all combine To advance Australia fair. In joyful strains then let us sing "Advance Australia fair!"
Verse Four
While other nations of the globe Behold us from afar, We'll rise to high renown and shine Like our glorious southern star; From England, Scotia, Erin's Isle, Who come our lot to share, Let all combine with heart and hand To advance Australia fair! In joyful strains then let us sing "Advance Australia fair!"
Verse Five
Shou'd foreign foe e'er sight our coast, Or dare a foot to land, We'll rouse to arms like sires of yore To guard our native strand; Brittannia then shall surely know, Beyond wide ocean's roll, Her sons in fair Australia's land Still keep a British soul. In joyful strains the let us sing "Advance Australia fair!"

O say can you see by the dawn's early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming, Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight, O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming? And the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there; O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave, O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep, Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam, In full glory reflected now shines in the stream: 'Tis the star-spangled banner, O! long may it wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion, A home and a country, should leave us no more? Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave: And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave, O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
O thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand Between their loved home and the war's desolation. Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the Heav'n rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation! Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto: "In God is our trust." And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Dąbrowski's Mazurka (national anthem of Poland)
Poland has not yet perished, So long as we still live. What the alien force has taken from us, We shall retrieve with a sabre.
March, march, Dąbrowski, From the Italian land to Poland. Under your command We shall rejoin the nation.
We'll cross the Vistula and the Warta, We shall be Polish. Bonaparte has given us the example Of how we should prevail.
March, march...
Like Czarniecki to Poznań After the Swedish occupation, To save our homeland, We shall return across the sea.
March, march...
A father, in tears, Says to his Basia: "Listen, our boys are said To be beating the tarabans."
March, march...

National Anthem of Russian Federation.
O Russia, for ever you’re strong sacred country ! O Russia, for ever the land that we love! The fame that is great and the will that is mighty – So be they thy treasure in ages to come. Praised be the Fatherland, cherishing home of ours – Cent’ries-old union of peoples in free, Popular wisdom given us by ancestors. Praised be our country! And we’re proud of thee! From seas in the South and up to polar border Our woods and our meadows have stretched far away. Alone in the whole world, you stand one and only! By God saved as ever our dear native land. Praised be the Fatherland, cherishing home of ours – Cent’ries-old union of peoples in free, Popular wisdom given us by ancestors. Praised be our country! And we’re proud of thee!
For generous dreaming, for life and for longing The years approaching give us ample scope. With faith in our Homeland we are getting stronger. It was so, it is so and it will be so! Praised be the Fatherland, cherishing home of ours – Cent’ries-old union of peoples in free, Popular wisdom given us by ancestors. Praised be our country! And we’re proud of thee!

Portuguese National Anthem (A Portuguesa ,English: The Portuguese) - In ceremonies it is generally only the 1st verse and chorus (in bold) that is played and sung. It is extremely rare that the entire anthem is played.
Heroes of the sea, noble people, Brave and immortal nation, Raise once again today, The splendor of Portugal! Among the haze of memory, Oh Fatherland, one feels the voice Of your distinguished forefathers, That shall lead you to victory!
(chorus) To arms, to arms! Over land, over sea, To arms, to arms! For the Fatherland, fight! Against the cannons, march on, march on!
Hoist the undefeated Flag, In the lively light of your sky! May Europe cry out to the whole Earth: Portugal has not perished Kiss your merry ground The Ocean, roaring with love, And your victorious arm Gave new worlds to the World!
Salute the Sun that rises Over a gleeful future; Let the echo of an offense Be the sign for a comeback. Rays of this strong dawn Are like a mother's kisses, That keep us, sustain us, Against the injuries of fate.
(In our native tongue)
Desfralda a invicta Bandeira, À luz viva do teu céu!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Portuguesa
MP3 file, as played by the United States Navy Band http://www.navyband.navy.mil/anthems/ANTHEMS/Portugal.mp3
[As a final footnote, the last line of the chorus, "Contra os canhões marchar, marchar!" (English: Against the cannons, march, march!), used to be, "Contra os bretões marchar, marchar" (English: Against the Britons, march, march!) which is slang for english people. It was only used during an ultimatum made by the british Queen Victoria]

That's an interesting idea. I've probably listen to the American anthem way too much that I know it word for word too haha (thank you IndyCar and NASCAR races).
Thought I'd share the Singapore anthem too, and I bet not many of you know that it's not actually in English, it's in Malay:
Mari kita rakyat Singapura sama-sama menuju bahagia; Cita-cita kita yang mulia, berjaya Singapura.
Marilah kita bersatu dengan semangat yang baru; Semua kita berseru, Majulah Singapura, Majulah Singapura!
Marilah kita bersatu dengan semangat yang baru; Semua kita berseru, Majulah Singapura, Majulah Singapura!
And the English translation:
Come, fellow Singaporeans Let us progress towards happiness together May our noble aspiration bring Singapore success
Come, let us unite In a new spirit Together we proclaim Onward Singapore Onward Singapore
Come, let us unite In a new spirit Together we proclaim Onward Singapore Onward Singapore

The dutch anthem officially has 15 couplets, all first letters form the title; "Wilhelmus". It is the oldest anthem in the world, written between 1568 and 1572. It's the official anthem since 1932.
Official text of the single couplet which is actually used, which is old dutch:
"Wilhelmus van Nassouwe Ben ick van Duytschen Bloedt, Den Vaderland ghetrouwe Blijf ick tot inden doet; Een Prince van Orangien Ben ick vry onverveert. Den Coninck van Hispangien Heb ick altijt gheeert."
Roughly English translated version:
"Wilhelmus/William of Nassau am I from German blood, faithful to the fatherland, I stay until dead. A price of Orange, I am fearless, The king of Spain, I have always honored."
The Netherlands, of German blood (Nassau was a german state), a prince of Orange (a small area in France), honoring the Spanish king.. shit has hit the fan!

Here is ours.
English:
Where is my home, where is my home? Water roars across the meadows, Pinewoods rustle among crags, The garden is glorious with spring blossom, Paradise on earth it is to see. And this is that beautiful land, The Czech land, my home, The Czech land, my home.
Pretty short tho :D

It`s such a shame that the English national anthem is not about the country at all. It`s more of a kiss ass tune for whoevers overfed bum is on the throne at the time. Sure as hell ain`t gonna post the lyrics.
England should use something like Land of Hope and Glory.... then it`s more national... and when you watch ``The Proms`` it gets sung with more passion and gusto than the current tune.
Also the national anthem sounds more like a funeral march than a rousing call to arms that it should be.
Just my 2 pennies worth on the subject. Little rant over. I`m off back to my box now.

Moroccan anthem (english) :
Fountain of Freedom, Source of Light Where sovereignty and safety meet, Safety and sovereignty may you ever combine! You have lived among nations with title sublime, Filling each heart, sung by each tongue, Your champion has risen and answered your call. In my mouth and in my blood Your breezes have stirred both light and fire. Up! my brethren, strive for the highest. We call to the world that we are here ready. We salute as our emblem God, Homeland, and King.

Serbian on English: (The original song was written in 1872)
God of Justice, You who saved us From disasters till this day, Hear from now on, our voices, And from now on, save us!
Defend with Your mighty hand, That very future Serbia walks to, God save, God protect, Serbian lands and Serbian people!
Bind them closer, brother Serbians Teach them to proudly work and love, United, our enemies we'll conquer and Serbia's cities we will defend.
Serbia's golden fruits of friendship are riping united high from our liberty's tree, God save, God protect, Serbian lands and Serbian people!
Save all Serbians from Your anger, Thunder coming from up above, Bless every Serbian village, Mountain, meadow, town and home!
When the days of battle happen, to the victory lead the pace, God save, God protect, Serbian lands and Serbian people!
In that sepulcher of years Serbia's glory rises anew, A new era now is dawning, That new beginning, that God gave us!
Sustain for us the Serbian fatherland, just like the five centuries passed, God save, God protect, Thus entreats the Serbian people! --------------------------------------------- In original:

Austria (no worries, won't win my current group three times this season):
Land of mountains, land by the stream, Land of fields, land of cathedrals, Land of hammers, with a promising future, Home to great daughters and sons, A nation highly blessed with beauty, Much-praised Austria, Much-praised Austria!
Strongly feuded for, fiercely hard-fought for, Thou liest in the middle of the continent Like a strong heart, Since the early days of the ancestors thou hast Borne the burden of a high mission, Much tried Austria, Much tried Austria.
Bravely towards the new ages See us striding, free, and faithful, Assiduous and full of hope, Unified, in jubilation choirs, let us Pledge allegiance to thee, Fatherland Much beloved Austria, Much beloved Austria.
And in German (original language):
Land der Berge, Land am Strome, Land der Äcker, Land der Dome, Land der Hämmer, zukunftsreich! Heimat großer Töchter und Söhne, Volk, begnadet für das Schöne, Vielgerühmtes Österreich, Vielgerühmtes Österreich!
Heiß umfehdet, wild umstritten, Liegst dem Erdteil du inmitten Einem starken Herzen gleich. Hast seit frühen Ahnentagen Hoher Sendung Last getragen, Vielgeprüftes Österreich, Vielgeprüftes Österreich.
Einig laß in Jubelchören, Vaterland, dir Treue schwören. Vielgeliebtes Österreich, Vielgeliebtes Österreich.
Politicians rephrased our national anthem in 2012 to make a gendered version (which you can see above). The older one was more beautiful and fluent to read/sing - but hey, we voted for these idiots, so we can't blame anyone else... :-/

Argentine National Anthem, in sports they tend to reduce it to the introduction because of its long instrumental parts. Here in GPRO you hear the full version.
Hear, mortals, the sacred cry: "Freedom! Freedom! Freedom!" Hear the noise of broken chains, see the noble Equality enthroned.
For their most honourable throne has opened The United Provinces of the South. And the free ones of the world reply: "To the great Argentine people, hail!" "To the great Argentine people, hail!" And the free ones of the world reply: "To the great Argentine people, hail!" And the free ones of the world reply: "To the great Argentine people, hail!"
May the laurels be eternal, the ones we managed to win, the ones we managed to win. Let us live crowned in glory... or let us swear in glory to die! Or let us swear in glory to die! Or let us swear in glory to die!
In Spanish:
Oíd, mortales, el grito sagrado: "¡Libertad! ¡Libertad! ¡Libertad!"
