WELCOME TO SEASON 18 OF THE FOOTBALL PREDICTION LEAGUE!
(Game concept by Marc Dudley)
Previous Seasons
FPL Season 17 FPL Season 16 FPL Season 15 FPL Season 14 FPL Season 13 FPL Season 12 FPL Season 11 FPL Season 10 FPL Season 9 FPL Season 8 FPL Season 7 FPL Season 6 FPL Season 5 FPL Season 4 FPL Season 3 FPL Season 2 FPL Season 1
The Rules
Like any other prediction game, you have to predict the outcome of footy matches.
However, the twist with this game is that each player picks a football club (see about team eligibility below) and each manager with their team will then compete against the other players in their league with fixtures every saturday.
For example. Say Jim Hope is Arsenal and Lee Smith is Liverpool. On matchday 1 they will be facing eachother. The winner will get 3 points, a draw will mean 1 point each and a defeat means 0 points, like in the real football world. For each correct prediction the player/team gets one goal. Jim predicts 4 matches correct, whilst Lee predicts 2 matches correct. Therefore the result of this Football Prediction League fixture is Arsenal 4-2 Liverpool.
Each manager will play eachother once and therefore there will be 9 matchdays in a season for all leagues. There will also be an FP Cup, the rules for this are below.
There will be a total of six matches to predict each league matchday/weekend (the matches will be from be picked either from the four major European leagues - Spain, England, Germany, Italy - or from any other available leagues that are currently playing). The matches to predict will be posted at the latest Thursday morning, whilst match results will be posted by the latest Monday every week.
All predictions are made for regulation time results (meaning the first 90 minutes plus any injury time involved). If the matches to be predicted involve extra-time and penalty shootouts, then the result before extra-time will be considered for the prediction.
If managers miss predictions, they will receive 0 goals by default for the missed matches.
However, managers can still send in predictions for the remaning matches if they miss the first deadline, as long as they make the predictions before each game starts.
If a player misses 3 matchdays (league + cup) in a row without any explanation he will be automatically sacked and the teams predictions will be made by yours truly. If there are people on the waiting list, then a player can be replaced after missing 2 matchdays (league + cup) in a row without any explanation.
If you know in advance that you will miss a matchday or more, feel free to ask me if you can send predictions in advance. It is very likely that I will accept your request.
Unmanaged teams would be assigned predictions of 0 - 0 draws for each game. If the game in question ends with 0 - 0, the unmanaged team gets a goal scored. If the game ends with a draw but with goals scored, the unmanaged team gets nothing.
Please do not ask me to give you another manager's predictions. If you wish to know their prediction, you can ask them.
Please do not ask to change predictions after you already sent them. It is very likely that I will say 'no' to that request.
How To Join The Game
All you have to do in order to join the game is post "##Join (team name)", where the team name can be the name of any currently active football team (try to pick a team that everyone heard of, exceptions may be made). Make sure the team you are picking is not already taken. See below in "Season 18 Line-up" for the current complete list of teams.
Important note: I reserve the right to reject any new player that is known to have caused issues around the forums with his/her behavior or any player that joined FP League before and then disappeared without any sort of notice.
Team eligibility
I will accept any teams that are listed as active on the Soccerway website in the past 12 months. If the team in question played at least a game of any kind (friendly, league, cup) in the last 12 months, then the team will be accepted.
Tie-breakers for league classification
Tie-breakers for league classification will be as follows in the order that they will count for the standings:
1. Number of points 2. Goals scored (meaning total number of correct predictions made) 3. Head-to-head result 4. Goal difference 5. Random draw
The reasoning for the 'Goals scored' tie-breaker being ahead of the others is the fact that this is primarily a predicting game. Therefore it is only fair that the manager with more correct predictions should be given priority.
Promotion/Relegation Regulations
In Season 18, two teams will automatically relegated from Premier League and two teams will automatically promote from Championship. 8th place from Premier League will have a play-off match against 3rd from Championship.
There will be two automatic relegations from Championship and top team from each Division league will promote automatically. There will be also playoffs involving the two Division leagues as such:
2nd from Division North to play 3rd from Division South 3rd from Division North to play 2nd from Division South
The match winners will play 7th and 8th from Championship for spots in Season 19's Championship league.
If a manager decides to retire and start with another team in Season 19, they will be starting directly in one of the third division leagues In order to adjust for promotions/relegations, relegation spots from Premier League and Championship would be reduced by one.
Win Division/Promote or Bust
For new managers (managers who are not already involved in league play) who take over any teams left without a manager playing in the first two tiers, the respective teams will give the manager one single objective for the season: they have to either win the division (or just promote, if option is available) or they would be starting in the third tier next season.
So please make sure you know what you are getting yourself into when taking over a manager-less team from the Premier League or the Championship. ;)
'Bot Teams' in the Division
If there were not enough players that have joined the game by the time the season officially starts, there will be 'bot teams' created in the Division leagues. Any player that would want to join the game after the season starts, they can take over one of the available 'bot teams' in the Division leagues (if any 'bot teams' are still available). The moment the new player takes over the 'bot team', the points and the 'goals scored/received' stat for the team would be reset to zero. The new player would only have the remaining matches in the season to score points and climb up in the standings.
Like the case of unmanaged teams (see above), 'bot teams' would be assigned predictions of 0 - 0 draws for each game. If the game in question ends with 0 - 0, the 'bot' gets a goal scored. If the game ends with a draw but with goals scored, the 'bot' gets nothing.
Any 'bot team' in the Division leagues would not be eligible for playoff/promotion. If it is taken over by a new player, the team in question will have everything reset to zero and will be eligible for promotion ... if the player can score enough points to be in a playoff/promotion position. :)
FP Cup/FP Trophy
The FP Cup (also known as Dudley Cup from Season 8) and FP Trophy (also known as ClearTrack Trophy) are cup competitions taking place on the weekend every other week (between regular league matchdays).
It all starts with a playoff stage.
Playoff stage: worst 16 teams from last season play one 'elimination match' (term will be explained below) to see who goes through to the knockout stage. The 8 losers wait for one week.
Then begins the FP Cup Knockout Stages. In the first round, 8 winners from playoff stage and the remaining 24 teams are paired in home-and-away series (without home advantage). The second game in the series is an 'elimination match'. The 16 losers will go in the FP Trophy Group Stage, together with the 8 losers from the playoff stage.
In the second and following knockout rounds, the losers simply exit the competition.
FP Trophy Group Stage will take place as follows: there will be 6 groups of 4 managers each. As far as matches are concerned, everything will be like regular league play, meaning you have to send only the prediction for each match. Each team will play the others once. Group winners advance automatically, plus the two best 2nd-placed teams. The tie-breaking criteria for group classification will be the same ones from the regular league classification (see above). The tie-breaking criteria for 2nd-placed teams: goals scored, points and playoff.
Then, there will be FP Trophy Knockout Stages, with home-and-away series, as it is for the FP Cup. Again, no home advantage and the second game is an 'elimination match'.
Elimination matches
For this type of match, you are required to send in not only the prediction for each match, but also the scoreline and also a tie-breaker prediction. The score between the two teams is decided as for regular league play, as described above. However, if the score (or aggregate score, in case of home-and-away series) is tied after the predictions are taken into consideration, then the scorelines are coming in. Each correctly predicted scoreline will be counted as a goal in extra-time.
If the score (or aggregate score) is still tied after this, then we move to number of goals scored by each team in the predicted matches. Each correct number of team goals will be counted as a goal in the penalty shootout. If the score (or aggregate score) is still tied, then whichever player has predicted a total number of goals closer to the actual total from the predicted matches scores the winning goal. The players don't need to send the actual total of goals, it will be counted from the scorelines submitted.
If the two teams are equally close to the total team goals, then the tie-breaker prediction (which will consist of predicting the minute of the fastest goal from the predicted matches) will be used to break the tie. If there is still a tie after that, then a coin flip will have to decide the winner.
If a player is late sending the tie-breaker and the first match started, the default input for them will be 90 minutes.
Manager of the Season Award
Starting with Season 12, there will be a 'Manager of the Season' award being given to the best manager of that season. Each manager will be rated based on 'goals scored' in the league and performance in the Dudley Cup.
For each manager, a weight will be applied to 'goals scored', depending on the league where they played: 1.2 for Premiership, 1.1 for Championship and 1.0 for Division.
For cup performance, each manager will receive bonus points as follows: for the managers reaching Round of 16 - 1 point, for Quarter-finalists - 2 points, for Semifinalists - 4 points, for Finalist - 6 points and for the Cup Winner - 8 points.
The two amounts resulted from league and cup will be added and will give a total amount of points. The manager with the highest total amount will be named 'Manager of the Season'.
Tie-breaking criteria:
1. Competition points (League points + Cup points) 2. League level (lower level gets priority) 3. Best league performance (better ranking gets priority) 4. Most league points (more points gets priority)
