Breaking news, two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso to retire at the end of the season

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/formula1/45188028

Sad, really, that his career was held back for so long by below par machinery. Best driver of his generation, IMO (but debatable, of course)

He was in below par machinery because the good teams wouldn't give a seat to a douche like him. That's especially true for the years after roughly 2012.

It's not going to be the same without him, but I hope he at least gets something out of it.

Maybe. His rivals as 'greatest of his generation' have barely had a teammate they didn't have a completely cold-war relationship with. So, probably, there's not much in that.

Having a sh*t car and engine for the last few seasons it doesn't matter who his teammate or engineers were.He would have been quicker in a 2004 Volvo...

Considering that it's those engineers who are the only people in the position to give him a better car, I'd say it matters ESPECIALLY in this situation...

Alonso > Hamilton + Vettel ... yes,yes togther.

anyway, bad decisions (signed contracts with teams that were unable to deliver) throughout his carreer...made him unable to fight for more than two championships

I havn't rated Alonso since the last time he was at McLaren tbh, to me he always sounded like he expected teams to roll out the red carpet for him. He was good at Renault though....the first time....seems like a generation ago though tbh so maybe he was the best of his generation...just not the current one :). I don't think he will be missed at all, and I know some may find that hard to stomach, but he took his ass into an uncompetitive environment and the only thing he has to show for it is a mural of him in a deckchair. Kinda feel sorry for him really that it ends that way, but he made that call, and some other bad ones during his career it must be said.Should've won more titles with the talent he showed at a young(er) age.

Yeah if you reduce "his generation" to just 2005 and 2006 (after the Schumacher era and before Hamilton and Vettel came along), then yes he was definitely the best of his generation. :D (although Räikkönen seemed to be the better driver in 2005)

That was expected. There was no more place for Alonso at the top of F1.

Since 2007 he make problems in all the teams he worked. He made several mistakes in his career and ended up destroying himself in his own arrogance.

Too bad, one of the best drivers the F1 has ever seen.

What's your parameters for being 'one of the best ever' if top-20 doesn't qualify?

good thing they changed the rules, cause he could have been using the "R" as a tactic.

First what I saw in comment below the Alonso's news was "#WRUCI" (I will translate it as #CUMBACK, not #COMEBACK), the hashtag of Polish "season fans" or as I named them "animals" which appeared below every news about transfer rumor in F1.

And no, not give Kubica his seat.

Shame he didn't win more titles as they would have been well deserved I'm sure but that is just the right team at the right time which most drivers in F1 can lament about.

The one an only season he had a team mate who could beat him he got all salty about it then had to leave so for that reason he's nota great, but certainly a commended entry into F1 history.

I prefer to remember his drives for Minardi & Renault
