@Robert Kearney (A67), just a second too late. Chelsea and Man City are near-confirmed to drop out of the ESL. This is a miracle.

They're basically doing the same thing to the premier league that investors did to the EFL when the premier league was born

Incorrect. The PL was formed as a way of breaking the stranglehold the old farts at the Football League had over the game at the time. The mob at Lytham St Annes were completely out of touch with what the people outside of their cartel wanted. English football was in a mess in the late 80s and they had no idea how to fix it, much less how to pay for the things that needed fixing.

In the case of the Super League the ones removed from reality were the chairmen of the teams who wanted to breakaway. Completely clueless about what fans, players and broadcasters want.

That may be true Michael, hopefully it is but I stand by my initial statement

“I am ashamed of my team even considering it”

they have only back tracked because they could see the writing on the wall in the response of the fans.... All fans !

Fans were not even considered or allowed to put forward their own view. That’s how much they are respected.

Totally agree, I think all local fans especially will do. Very likely our owner will sell up, as it's always been rumoured, but not sure the others will

The rest will soon follow. Apart from Real Madrid and Barcelona that have tremendous ammount of debt and are desperate for extra revenue.

Welcome to the first ever European Super League match! Tonight, we have Real Madrid hosting Barcelona. The winner of this match will, of course, move into the top spot, while the loser will be rock bottom, in 2nd place, since there are no other teams in the league.

Next week, we will see Barcelona become the hosts for the second match.

This is sure to be a thrilling competition, when we see El Classico contested every single week for the next 38 weeks.

IBut money is the same colour regardless of how it's spent, and I think this will end in 2 months of posturing, UEFA locking in some "heritage bonuses" for the Yank teams, and we'll kick the can down the decade.

Lol, not so much 2 months as 2 days. Barca's out, Woodward's leaving, Kroenke's apologised to the fans... RIP ESL

Phew - so glad they've withdrawn; could have been horrendous and that should definitely be the end of it as I don't see them managing to do an ESL without any English, French or German teams!

I hope the English fans use the momentum to force the government to bring in legislation changes to match the German model (fans own at least 51% of clubs).

Lovely idea - highly doubt that would ever happen though, as that would require a colossal amount of money from the fans to reach the type of valuation the Premier League clubs would command...

The champions league could be re-organised better even than what the current proposals are.

Personally, Id make it 8 groups of 6, play each team twice for 10 games. Top 2 Qualify for the last 16 and all games are a single leg knockout. Doesn't increase the total number of games, but increases the number of participants by 50%. They could give an extra spot to each of the top 12 leagues, while also keeping 4 reserved spots for teams that fail to qualify through their league position (based on UEFA club coefficient or something). Done. Make me UCL organiser :p

how about this?

top 2 of every European League go into a 2 legged playoff cup all the way until the final.

3rd n 4th is the same, winner gets a CL spot.

same with 5th n 6th getting a EL spot.

no legacy places, no seedings, EVERYONE enters r1. just a simple knockout competition

I’m not gonna read this thread just wanted to say everyone knew ESL would fail and for that matter every other league is playing for sloppy seconds anyways. We all know MLS is the best soccer league and NFL the best football

Alternatively, just have champions in it!!! It's become more and more of a joke as UEFA search for more and more money. The Albanian, Irish or Finnish champions are more entitled to a place than the 2nd, 3rd or 4th placed clubs in England, Spain or Italy. It should be the only way you can truly be champions of Europe, by being champions of your own league first.

Sadly it'll never happen because it's all about greed, the 22 people kicking a ball round are merely a sideshow.

I think the title of the 'Champions League' should change tbh - as Mark says (and I know, this wasn't the point you were making Mark) it doesn't include just champions.

However, from my point of view, the top teams in Europe that season should all qualify to produce the best competition. That isn't the same as certain teams having the right to qualify every season (e.g. if Real Madrid are the 10th best Spanish team, they shouldn't be included).

I would far rather see the 4th placed English team in there vs the 1st placed Albanian team - presuming the 4th placed English team are actually better than the 1st placed Albanian team.

It's tricky to work that out exactly - but if the Albanian, Irish or Finnish champions were that good then one would expect that they would qualify through the play-offs...

Incidentally, what could be really interesting is a straight knock-out competition with the Champions only from each of the Top 16 or Top 32 leagues (seeded by league ranking), to go alongside the competition that has all of the best European teams in it. Would rather that than a 3rd tier European competition (though I've no major objections to that otherwise).
