Lazio v Juve was pretty much my first Serie A match I've ever watched...

Great match to watch. However... wasn't Cancelo in an offside position when fouled? If so, isn't that becoming "actively involved in play" while in an offside position, and therefore offside, rather than a foul?

From my interpretation of the rules, you could card the defender for unsporting behavior, but it would still be deemed offside, right?

Since the player is in an offside position, he can't do anything that would benefit his team... i.e. get fouled... right?

Asking simply as an avid world football fan and youth official. I'm pretty confident in my reasoning, but if someone knows of any official documentation anywhere to contradict this, it would be useful for me to know.

Taken directly from the IFAB website (http://www.theifab.com/laws/offside-2018/chapters/offside-offence-2018):

In situations where:
(...)
an offence is committed against a player in an offside position who is already playing or attempting to play the ball, or challenging an opponent for the ball, the offside offence is penalised as it has occurred before the foul challenge.

Cancelo wasn't attempting to play the ball as Ronaldo hadn't passed the ball yet. So it's a foul and a penalty.

Welcome to Serie A btw :)
It's a great and entertaining (from the 2nd place down) league.
The most entertaining football is played by Napoli & Atalanta atm, so give those teams a watch if you want.

Yea, don't watch Milan, so uninteresting... They could beat Juventus one day and lose to Frosinone the other day. I mean okay you have your bad days, but you play better against worser teams and you lose, you play worse against better teams and you at least get a point.

BTW, why is Kessie so highly rated? I haven't seen anything good from him since he came to Milan.

Wow... more than a year since one posted in this thread. Is Serie A so uninteresting? At least this season there is a close fight for the title.

Inter will know if they are still capable of winning the title on March 1st, if we lose, it's gonna be hard even if Sarri is likely to drop more points until the end of the season especially now the Champions League fixture comes into play.

Lazio have it the easiest, would be great actually to see someone new expect Juve/Inter/Milan

I used to support Juventus, but then they signed Ronaldo. I still prefer them over any Spanish club tho.
I like to keep an eye on Cagliari, Atalanta and Inter.

I used to support Milan. My best friend from the neighbourhood where I lived as a kid was supporting Juventus, and was always trolling me that they are better than Milan. I think that if we meet now, he will continue doing this :)

The only gift that is being given is that of the referees handling the title to you like a spoiled little child
5 years in a row we win everything in Italy, this is gonna be 6th. But we have a contract with referees for another 4 more years so yeah we are hoping to make it 10 years in a row and you could grow watching us do that.

There's not much to say especially now ...

We are however seeing a bit more exciting title races with Napoli pushing Juve hard a while ago and now Lazio and Inter kinda but as they say:

Football is a simple game. Twenty-two men chase a ball for 90 minutes and at the end, Juventus cheats and wins :P

Point is that I don't cry for it. It's more vital for you that we fail (as you cannot celebrate your successes, the only joy for you is that we fail) than for me to succeed :P

Not true I'd rather see us win, then you fail.

What's it good for us if you constantly fail and other teams dominate ?

I mean Inter vs Milan games now just are over-hyped training drills for us :D

BTW, Inter did the only sensible thing to do: hire Conte. I believe it is the only one who could fix that team.
