Can't believe how many excellent drivers have been mentioned here.

And Robert, you can't be serious with so much extremely talented drivers that you mentioned?

Bertrand Gachot set the fastest race lap in the Hungarian '91 GP, his last for jordan.

Roberto Moreno: a former F.Ford & F.3000 champion who raced for Benetton (fastest race lap Spa '91)

Schiattarella: former karting champion who was runner up in Italian F3

Nicola Larini: superb talent, many years Ferrari F1 test driver, even scored a podium for them

Pedro Lamy: F3000 champion

Max Papis: had an excellent IndyCar carreer after F1

Andrea Montermini: very quick driver but never had a car to show it in F1

Gianni Morbidelli: was one of the quicker F1 drivers, check out how fast he was in the Arrows: faster as Christian Fittipaldi

etc..................

That whole list is just too ridiculous for words.

I could understand Délétraz or Lavaggi but even they weren't really that bad. Délétraz was competitive in F3000 and when he finally drove an F1 car he was out of single seaters and driving touring cars for many years, a young Délétraz would have been much quicker. And Lavaggi was a decent sports car driver, not a driver that should have been in F1 though.

No if you want to look for the worst F1 driver: search in the 1950's, under several gentlemen drivers.

It is called the Worst F1 Driver ever, not the least talented driver ever :P

Sure lets face it, no matter what you have to have talent and have achieved something to make it into Formula 1, they wont just hand a Super License out to anyone, you have to earn it.

But at the same time, Formula 1 just isn't right for some drivers,

I think the V8 supercar international race of recent years at Surfers Paradise is a good example of that, we have seen Ex Formula 1 Champions, as well as other world famous drivers who come to Australia to race a V8 supercar, and none of them have managed to match the speed that the full time drivers had. Also most of them crashed as well, It made some of the worlds best drivers, look like a bunch of un talented rookies.

Take Marc Gene, I wouldn't call him the worst, as most his races were done at Minardi, in which he did manage to score 1 point, he only done 3 races out side of minardi and that was for Williams. all 3 races he finished, two inside the top 10, with 5th his be result.

Didn't do much in Formula 1, but outside of it he is a Le Mans 24 hour race winner.

So Yes, the worst Formula 1 Drivers will always have some form of bright history, how else would they have made it to Formula 1 :)
Just because your quick tho in Sport cars, or smaller formula's it doesn't mean your going to have the talent for Formula 1

But Peter: Robert Hays even mentioned drivers that drove a fastest racelap (Gachot, Moreno), scored a podium (Morbidelli in a Footwork Arrows, Larini was 2nd in a Ferrari at Imola '94) or have driven for Ferrari in F1 (Larini, Morbidelli). Surely such drivers do not belong in a 'worst driver' list.

I guess Robert seems to think that drivers who didn't win races are bad drivers. Several that he mentioned could have easily been race winners actually, if they had a car of a topteam.

Again: if you want to look for the worst drivers: look in the 1950s. In terms of performance in his only F1 race Al Pease does come to mind.

in my opinion there is no worst driver,,,,, they had to be up to the standard required for F1,, but unfortunatly some of them could not cope with the higher demands of F1,
That does not make them a crap driver, as they must have been considered good enough for a try out.

Ask your self... could you to race at 200mph ?

and be honest with your answer,

Bullshitters we have got plenty of

D'ambrosio should get a mention for his terrible performance in Grosjeans Lotus this season, struggling to even finish 13th in what was proven to be a race winning car.

He actually performed fine that weekend in Monza. I guess you didn't realize that he had technical problems in his car. He didn't have KERS all race and Monza is the most important track to have KERS with all the long fast straights there. His lap times were pretty good considering this and unlike Grosjean on many occasions last year, he brought the car home.

Grosjean and d'Ambrosio were actually teammates in GP2 in 2010 during 3 weekends and d'Ambrosio outperformed Grosjean on 2 out of 3 weekends (in Spa he was on pole but his car broke down, in Monza het was 2nd, in Abu Dhabi Grosjean had the upper hand). So don't judge too quickly, he's an excellent driver.

Plus: with the testing ban he had to step in a car that he hardly knew, not an ideal situation.

Satoru Nakajima should be in the list :p

Nah he was quite a fine driver. Although a star in Japan (5 F.Nippon titles) he was never amongst the better drivers in F1, his links to Honda got him in F1. But he had some of the fastest drivers of their era as his teammates: Ayrton Senna, Nelson Piquet, Jean Alesi, Stefano Modena. Not easy to be compared with those. But now and then Nakajima had good races and he did score points now and then, he was an excellent rain driver, had a 4th place and fastest racelap at Adelaïde in the soaking rain.

Actually they seem to be giving the licence to pretty much anyone with a bit of cash.

The title of worst F1 driver ever still goes to Bernie Ecclestone.

He didn't even get into the races as he was too slow, all attempts ending up as DNQ

Michael Andretti was the victim of joining a great team just as they went into a decline, and had Senna as a teammate, who was always going to beat him.

Worst ever? Don't know but from ones I saw obviously Button. Maybe he is not the most talentless but I will never forget his fake title. As a person who rate justice the highest I can not accept and will never call him a champ! Better talentless fool with Trabant wins a championship than cheater.

Ah yeah but Andretti was a top top champ car (champion I believe) driver and should have done a lot better in a car that wasn't the best on the grid but certainly was not the worst. He really could not hack F1 and left without completing a season.

Priceless article, interview about Taki Inoue i read today:

http://www.motorsportmagazine.com/f1/history/taki-inoue-inte...

What he said about his first F1 race:

“The car felt so bad,” he says, “and it was a good thing I crashed early on because I didn’t even know what the pitstop procedure was.”

A very interesting article David. One word kept appearing "perception" and I think it is a very valid point, perception is everything. I seem to remember that he turned up in F1 with a swagger and "loud" wife. His interviews in the early days gave a feeling that he is a Champ car champion so what is so hard about F1, alas it did not take him long to find out.
