Attacking and Defending

Quote ( Jun Ho @ February 3rd 2020,09:01:35 )

Defend

From the Wiki:

b) DEFEND (only posted after an ATTACK)

As such, this post is simply disregarded - though admittedly it does give me a little more flavour for the report :D

Attack

So this is the 1st post in the sequence, which continues with...

Quote ( Jun Ho @ February 3rd 2020,15:33:10 )

Defend

and then...

Quote ( Wopke Hoekstra @ February 3rd 2020,17:15:27 )

Attac

(which is fine from my point of view) and then...

Quote ( Jun Ho @ February 3rd 2020,19:42:13 )

Defend

As such that is 2 blocked attacks so 0.2 seconds is added to both Driver's for next lap.

Meanwhile...

Quote ( Christian Anello @ February 3rd 2020,14:56:46 )

Attack

Followed by...

Quote ( John Ibbotson @ February 3rd 2020,19:38:28 )

Defend

As such that is 1 blocked attack so 0.1 seconds is added to both Driver's for next lap. Good job John defended that, or his Perfect Lap attempt (which is calculated after the Attack/Defends) would have become invalid!

Speaking of Perfect Lap Attempts...

Not within a minute of the hour, as Graham correctly stated - so simply disregarded.

Within 3 seconds of the hour, so gets his best lap of the race + 3 tenths of a second on Lap 61.

Quote ( Mark Witney @ February 3rd 2020,11:00:17 )

Perfect lap

Within 17 seconds of the hour, so gets his best lap of the race + 1.7 seconds on Lap 61. Given the fuel difference that could actually be a decent result still...!

1959 Indianapolis 500 - Lap 70/100

Lap 61 – A huge battle between Trintignant and Bianchi breaks out, with the latter swerving to the inside line prematurely – thereby encouraging the former to take the high line…through the 2nd turn Trintignant looks good to be able to pass the Cooper but Bianchi is resolute in his defending and manages to hold the position.

Meanwhile Herrmann pushes Gurney hard for 10th position, but simply cannot find a way past the resilient Maserati by diving up the inside – but as the lap wears on he resolves to simply focus on driving his own line, and manages to out-drag the Maserati down to the Start/Finish line to finally claim the position! Not only that but he manages to sneak ahead of Salvadori for 9th across the line as well…!!!

Elsewhere on track several drivers are picking up some real speed, including the likes of Naylor, Gregory, von Trips (who picks up a tow from a back-marker to give himself a real shot in the arm!), Moss and Gurney – who is having an action packed lap!

Lap 62 – Von Trips uses the momentum from his epic push last lap to haul himself past Graham Hill in the BRM and move up to 4th position in an otherwise uneventful lap.

Lap 63 – Flockhart pits from 3rd in what is rather an early stop for a 2-stop strategy, which drops him right down the order. Meanwhile the pace might be starting to get a little much for Salvadori, as the veteran finds himself struggling to defend from Gurney over what is now 9th overall.

Flockhart emerges in 21st, which has promoted von Trips to 3rd, Graham Hill to 4th, McLaren to 5th, Brabham 6th, Behra 7th and Herrmann 8th – with everyone down to Naylor (now 20th) gaining a position.

Lap 64 – Ward is now faster on track than d’Orey but is now 15 seconds down on the Ferrari in the lead, despite the Brazilian struggling with a broken part. Meanwhile both Burgess and Gendebien pass Flockhart with ease thanks to the Cooper’s cold tyres and new load of fuel!

Lap 65 – Von Trips is the fastest man on track, with 7 seconds to gain on Ward and 21 seconds on team-mate d’Orey…while the third Ferrari of Brabham makes a move on McLaren for 5th position that he completes at the exit of Turn 3. Gendebien passes Burgess for 21st place, while Allison pits from 24th to drop behind Brooks and Gregory as they fight over the minor placings.

Lap 66 – D’Orey, Graham Hill, McLaren, Salvadori, Testut and Bianchi all come into the pits on this lap – while on track Gregory gets the better of Brooks for what is initially 24th. All of that means Ward now leads over the line from von Trips (only by 6 seconds though), with Brabham up to 3rd, Behra 4th, Herrmann 5th, Gurney 6th, Phil Hill 7th and Trintignant 8th.

D’Orey emerges in 9th position with de Filippis now 10th, de Beaufort 11th, Moss 12th, Bonnier 13th, Scarlatti 14th, Naylor 15th and then Graham Hill out in 16th for BRM. Gendebien is 17th with Burgess 18th, McLaren out in 19th and Flockhart back up inside the Top 20.

Salvadori emerges in 21st with Testut 22nd, Gregory now into 23rd and Bianchi out in 24th position narrowly ahead of Brooks in 25th. Allison, Shelby and Ireland round out those still circulating here – though those three look destined to finish in the final three positions as it stands…

Lap 67 – Another set of stops with Brabham, Behra, Herrmann, Gurney, Moss and Gendebien all coming into the pits. That moves Phil Hill up to 3rd, Trintignant to 4th, d’Orey to 5th, de Filippis gaining quickly in 6th, with de Beaufort 7th, Bonnier now 8th and Naylor 9th after a tough pass on team-mate Scarlatti where the two almost touch!

Burgess is up to 11th, with Graham Hill only 12th after struggling on his out-lap with cold tyres and then it’s Brabham out in 13th, Behra out in 14th, McLaren up to 15th, Herrmann out in 16th, Gurney out in 17th, Flockhart up to 18th, Salvadori 19th and Gregory 20th after a great pass on Testut at Turn 2!

Brooks is now 22nd from Bianchi after a comfortable pass on the Cooper, with Moss out in 24th and Gendebien out in 25th after their respective pit-stops.

Lap 68 – Almost all of the remaining 2-stoppers pit on this lap, with von Trips, Phil Hill, Trintignant and Bonnier all coming in – though Gregory’s unusual strategy means that he is the only man on track to have only stopped once! Ward’s lead is now 51 seconds – though he does have another stop to do…as do de Filippis in 2nd and de Beaufort in 3rd, who both pass d’Orey – but they will need to really pull a gap on the Ferrari if they are to have a hope of staying in those positions!!!

D’Orey is now 4th, from Naylor 5th, Scarlatti 6th and then von Trips out in 7th. Burgess is up to 8th with Graham Hill 9th, Brabham 10th, Behra 11th, McLaren 12th and Phil Hill out in 13th, with Gurney and Herrmann’s fight allowing the BRM to come out ahead of them both. Gurney is now 14th with Herrmann 15th, Flockhart 16th, Salvadori 17th, Gregory 18th, Trintignant 19th and Brooks now 20th after timing his pass on Testut to perfection! Bianchi is 22nd now with Bonnier out in a disconsolate 23rd for Maserati…

Lap 69 – Ward laps 3rd placed de Beaufort in a real statement debut drive here! Meanwhile Gurney passes the recently pitted Phil Hill and drags Herrmann through behind him as well into 13th and 14th respectively. Gregory passes Salvadori for 17th and Brooks passes Trintignant for 19th position too, which prevents him from being lapped for a second time!

Lap 70 – The 3-stoppers have some serious pace right now, as the JBW’s reach d’Orey in 4th place and both Naylor and Scarlatti make short work of passing the Brazilian as a result. Meanwhile Burgess passes von Trips for 7th, though the Ferrari driver looks unconcerned given their very different strategies!

Meanwhile it’s a disaster for Aston Martin, as Salvadori refuses to yield from team-mate Brooks and they collide!!! Brooks seems able to carry on, albeit with a damaged car – while Salvadori is forced to make an unscheduled stop, which drops him WAY down the order…which means Brooks is now 18th despite his damage, Trintignant 19th, Testut 20th, Bianchi 21st, Bonnier 22nd, Moss 23rd, Gendebien 24th, Allison 25th and then it’s Salvadori out (and cursing his team-mate) in 26th overall.

1959 Indianapolis 500 - Lap 80/100

Lap 71 – Ward is inching closer to lapping the whole field – and is just 1.7 seconds behind de Filippis in 2nd now! Meanwhile McLaren moves over to let Gurney through (maybe keen to avoid what happened to Aston Martin there!) for 12th, Phil Hill gets the better of Herrmann for 14th and in his dirty wake he also loses a place to the fast-advancing Gregory, who gets the better of Flockhart this lap as well!

Lap 72 – Ward is 0.9 seconds away from lapping the field – though his 3rd stop must be coming up at some point soon…while attention right now is focused also on Gregory’s BRM and his unorthodox 2 stop strategy – which team-mate Phil Hill moves out of the way of, after giving him a draft to reach full speed! Gregory carries on and slingshots past McLaren, Gurney and Behra in the space of a single straight!!!

That means it’s Gregory 11th (up 4 places in a lap), Behra 12th, Gurney 13th, McLaren 14th and Phil Hill 15th overall – though before anyone gets too excited, Gregory does have another stop to make!

Lap 73 – 0.4 seconds for Ward to move into an incredibly powerful position of having lapped the entire field for Lotus!!! Meanwhile we now see the final stops of the race for the 3-stoppers, as Naylor is first man in for JBW and drops down the order from 4th overall – though he may yet be able to recover some of that ground at the end of the race…!

That means Scarlatti is now 4th but behind him it’s a DISASTER for d’Orey, who was the best 2-stopper in the race – but finds himself taken out ruthlessly by Burgess in the on-rushing JBW!!! Burgess is able to continue (and of course he has a pit-stop soon where they can fix his damage) but d’Orey is forced into the pits!

Top 2-stopper is now von Trips in the other Ferrari in 6th with Graham Hill 7th and Gregory now up to 8th for BRM after he passes a distracted Brabham…who is spending much of the lap looking down at his engine…!

Behra is back inside the Top 10 (remember he started on Pole Position!), with Gurney 11th, Phil Hill up to 12th after his move on McLaren at Turn 3 demotes the Maserati to 13th place and then Herrmann-Flockhart-Brooks occupying places 14 to 16 on-track. Naylor emerges in 17th position with Trintignant an unexpected 18th, Testut 19th, Bianchi inside the Top 20 on debut and then – and only then – do we see d’Orey emerge from the pits in what is a real kick in the teeth for the Brazilian with huge potential…

Lap 74 – The Ferrari pit-wall look absolutely gutted and designer Jack Bauer has his head in his hands after it appears to be three technical failures in one single race for the Ferrari team, as this time Jack Brabham appears to be afflicted with the issue – and while it’s only a minor drop in his pace, it is a drop nevertheless. Back to the drawing board for Bauer, it would seem…!

The only other action on track is Brooks passing Flockhart, as despite his wounded automobile the Aston Martin driver is still making the most out of what remains of his latest stint before his 3rd stop comes around soon. And Ward does indeed lap Maria Teresa de Filippis to confirm that he has lapped the entire field today…

Lap 75 – …though he and many of the remaining 3-stoppers come into the pits this time around – and crucially Ward in the Lotus emerges not only in the lead, but with a 33 second advantage over the ailing Burgess in 2nd and 44.9 seconds back to von Trips in the Ferrari! That’s a huge gap even for the reigning champion to try and make up…!

De Filippis is out in 4th with de Beaufort 5th – though how quickly they will be able to get their tyres up to temperature is anyone’s guess! Graham Hill comes around in 6th with Gregory still yet to stop for the second time in 7th and then Brabham sits 8th from the rather more interested Behra in 9th and Gurney in 10th overall.

Phil Hill is 11th with Scarlatti out in 12th the TINIEST bit ahead of McLaren 13th and then it’s Brooks up to 14th despite his car’s limitations, as he swoops around the outside of Herrmann in 15th position now.

Lap 76 – Despite his damage, Burgess in 2nd is the fastest man on track – though of course yet to stop, along with Gregory in 7th and – unfortunately – the duo of Shelby and Ireland at the rear of the pack. Brooks does pit this time to mend his own damage, which sees him fall from 14th to 24th. Ahead of him McLaren takes advantage of the JBW’s colder tyres to pounce and pass Scarlatti for 12th place.

Herrmann is now 14th from Flockhart, Naylor, Trintignant, Testut, Bianchi and d’Orey (who is now back inside the Top 20). Bonnier is 21st from Moss 22nd, Gendebien 23rd and then the recovering Brooks behind him!

Lap 77 – Ward looks a force to be reckoned with, as von Trips is actually losing ground to the youngster as the home fans cheer the Lotus around each and every lap that remains! Gurney meanwhile is another young American looking to make his mark – and if passing the Pole-Sitter won’t do that, then what will!?! He claims 9th place with a well-executed switch-back at the tricky Turn 3.

Further back, Scarlatti’s tyres are still not quite up to temperature – and it’s Herrmann who pounces this time as he claims 13th from the JBW, while d’Orey is a man on a mission as he unceremoniously demotes Bianchi to 20th place at Turn 2!

Lap 78 – It is at last time for Burgess to pit and – in all likelihood – end JBW’s chances of a podium in their debut race. Nevertheless (as he emerges in 16th to play rear-gunner to team-mate Naylor) it is still a promising debut for the British marque! That means von Trips is now 2nd, with de Filippis 3rd, Graham Hill 4th after a brave move on de Beaufort keeps the Dutchman in 5th place for Vanwall and Brabham back up to 6th after Gregory’s tyres seem to be screaming “enough”!!!

Gurney is now 7th and also ahead of the struggling BRM, while it is the opposite story for Phil Hill who seizes the opportunity at his home-track to move into 9th position from Behra in 10th. McLaren is 11th ahead of Herrmann in 12th and Flockhart in 13th after the Cooper deprives Scarlatti of a position – as the JBW looks desperately for a way to warm up his tyres and be competitive again…

Lap 79 – Gregory is still yet to stop and pulls to the high line at Turn 1 to let team-mate Phil Hill up into 8th position – but the unorthodox 2-stopper has taken its toll on the BRM, who finds himself out of grip completely and fighting just to keep the car pointing the right way! That moves Behra into 9th, McLaren 10th, Herrmann 11th, Flockhart 12th, Scarlatti 13th and then it’s the ailing Gregory in 14th place!

Further back, Salvadori is turning the air around his cockpit blue as he forces his way past Allison to move back into 25th position – in what has been a shocking race for the former Ferrari driver…

Lap 80 – Ward has kept the gap steady at 44.5 seconds for a few laps now and von Trips seems to be almost out of ideas! Barring a miracle, it looks to be a debut victory on home soil for the Lotus driver…while further back Flockhart passes Herrmann for 11th as he looks to make his way back into the Top 10 for Cooper.

Finally, Gregory at last comes into the pits (leaving only the back pair to make their final stops) and drops from 14th down to 22nd, which promotes Naylor and Burgess in the JBW’s to 14th and 15th respectively, along with Trintignant (16th), Testut (17th), the recovering d’Orey (18th), Bianchi (19th), Bonnier (now back inside the Top 20 for Maserati) and Moss (21st).

2 things I'd say: as Jon said, the fuel weight penalty is way too much right now. Second, I think that running more risk might also be too rewarding? I've barely seen any collisions and there is a reliability effect too, but I havent seen that in action yet

JB,

Any chance of a fastest lap table? I know we get how far off perfect but that would be easy to read.

I am actually displaying FLs for each driver on the Lap Chart image now (need them for the interactive session calcs).

Jon, are you a reincarnation of Murray Walker?

Great commentary mate.

Thanks mate :D if you go into the Wiki you can see in the 1956 Race Results that I actually did a recorded commentary where I spoke in the most 1950s British accent that I could muster lol :P

Interactive Session still going btw - just dropping in on my lunch break :P
