Aprašymas | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The Argentine President Juan Peron was the driving force behind the construction of the Autodromo 17 Octobre at Buenos Aires. Built on swamp land on the outskirts of the city, the circuit was opened in 1952, when it hosted the Peron Cup, won by Fangio. 1953 saw the first World Championship Argentine Grand Prix, a race won by Ascari but marred by the deaths of nine people in an accident caused by overcrowding. The next four years hold happier memories, each race being won by local hero Juan-Manuel Fangio. The Buenos Aires race has produced some memorable moments, including the amazing debut victory for the Wolf team in 1977. The race in 1981 was the last for a while as proceedings were interrupted by the Falklands war. The appointment of Carlos Menem (a keen sports fan) in the presidential election of 1989 paved the way for much needed circuit refurbishment, during which time the track was renamed after Argentine racing legend Oscar Galvez. Work began in August 1992, but it was not until 1995 that Formula 1 returned. The new track was much changed from the original, drivers complaining that it was too bumpy and allowed little chance for overtaking. The track hosted its last F1 race in 1998, Schumacher winning in his Ferrari. The 1999 race was cancelled due to lack of funds and F1 has not returned since. |
