I'd like to start by saying i don't want this to turn into a political ramble but i'd be interested in seeing other peoples opinions on this topic and apologies if i'm posting in the wrong column or not using the right amount of acronyms.

I'm an F1 fan of old, although a little reluctant in my early years, sat in front of the TV on a Sunday afternoon whilst my father snored off the Sunday roast, yet still somehow still aware enough to know the second i reached for the remote to watch some cartoons rather than the 'procession of cars', as if watching it the race with his minds eye. My father was also a classic car racer, so the paddock was my playground at race meets and the garage my second home as i handed spanners (of the wrong size) and generally got in the way. Motorsport is in me, anything with an engine and i'm into to it.

F1 has had some dark years, way before my time it was a dangerous place to be, but like most things it has evolved. Changes every season are brought in and the fans are up in arms, but in general its going the right way, the last couple of seasons in my humble opinion (sorry IMHO...?) have been cracking and this year looks better than ever, despite Ferrari bucking 60+ years of making pretty cars*. We've got a truly open field at the moment and a very long way to go, GP2 is working its magic and contributing some excellent talent i hope to cheer on for years to come.

Whilst i appreciate that F1 is all about the money and lots of it, we all know it cost millions just to turn up, then millions more to get any better, this game giving an great insight into the real balance of money and performance. Which would make sense to then pursue the guys with the money, but to what ends? Speaking as a fan, its great to see the season extended so far on so many levels, and i'm sure Bernie has a long list of other countries that want a slice of the glamour, but whats the point? Has F1 purely become a money making corporation loosely disguised as a competitive sport, or is still about passionate fans supporting they're favorite drivers and teams?

Turkey got axed this year which i think is a great shame, crowds were lacking yes, but motorsport is still developing in Turkey, that doesn't stop it being a great track the drivers love that has given us some fantastic driving (Redbull boys taking each other out, McLaren nearly doing the same...). I chuckled last week when they Eddie Jordan stated [in China] 'Formula 1 has found a home' which looked a convincing statement on the start finish straight but the grandstands everywhere else on track were empty...

So to Bahrain, should we go there just because in a world where cash is king, they have full pockets?

They are retarded if they are actually going to be racing there... Ecclestone made 100s and 100s of rules to make F1 safe, and now he wants to drive here. Man, think about it: You are making F1 safe at the cost of fun, and now you are going to make it more dangerous for them which doesn't even add any fun to the racing. That guy should really retire from his job

I do hope not ... unfortunately Bernie is going where the money is, not where the better tracks are and now apparently he's going to a shit track where also the whole F1 caravan is endangered, just for money.

Race will go through though as they're already there, but I smell Indy'05 ....

Civil Unrest and humanitarianism aside, I think Bernie has been watching Star Wars Ep 1 and thought pod racing was the right direction for F1: Racing at high speeds in the desert, with the constant threat of interference from local "sand people" (star wars terminology). Certainly looked exciting in 3D. lol

Hi all, 2 hours in and lots of posts, obviously lots of opinion out there.

I agree with most of the comments here that Bahrain isn't a safe place at the moment, so what would be the reason to cancel the race, the immediate danger to the teams as high profile foreigners OR the fact that the country is in political turmoil?

Well I wouldn't want to either race or spectate there this year, so if I were a high-profile driver who could be used by either side as a political pawn, I definitely wouldn't want anything to do with it.
