First of all it will be great to have a possibility to use different tyre compounds in the race
Really like the idea, I saw a not very popular thread about this. But I still think It will make more unpredictable races, and we could see more overtaking.

Great interview. Still I have a strange feeling when I read you saying "pass testings" as my russian team mate uses that term a lot aswell and I take some time to understand what he means :D

If people wish to whine "offer constructive criticism" about the interview notification, please keep it to the appropriate suggestion thread - /gb/forum/ViewTopic.asp?TopicId=26062#scroll - as anyone posting about them in other threads will find further action taken. Time once again to get a little quixotic, this time with the help of a veteran Portuguese player who's often been plagued by bad luck when he's reached the elite division. Please give a warm welcome to...

Welcome, Paulo. Tell us about the man behind the account, and what you do aside from GPRO.

My name is Paulo Pinto, I have 32 years old and I am currently living in Porto. I studied Math and made research in subjects like Discrete and Continuous Dynamical Systems or Catastrophe Theory. Also, during the time I was a researcher, I gave classes to the first and second year University Engineering students. Recently (more or less 3 years ago) I started working for a private Portuguese software company called Watchful Software (from Critical Software group) as Software Developer.

I spend most of my free time travelling. Also, I like a lot Motorsports and I usually organize kart races with my friends. I am currently practicing Extreme Enduro (I love motorcycles by the way) and I am learning the basics while at the same time having a lot of crashes. :)

As a Motorsport lover, I always try to follow all F1 and MotoGP races.

It's known that you were a double YRM champion before coming to GPRO. Talk a little about what that game was like, your time there, and your transition to GPRO.

Good times there. :)

YRM was my first massive multi player experience. There was a strong community there with Spain, France, Italy and Germany being the dominant countries. After some seasons learning the basics I went to an Italian team called TDS (Terrori Della Strada). With TDS I won my 2 world titles and also we won one team title. Made a lot of friends there, which some of them are playing GPRO.

The game had a strong random component, special moments to collect the best drivers on the market and DAs were allowed. These are the three reasons that made me leave YRM and start playing GPRO. The transition to GPRO was more easy than I thought. The game in rookie and amateur levels is quite simple, logic and straightforward. Ironically, I came to realise that the random impact in Elite is much stronger than it was in YRM. :|

You hail from sunny Portugal, a country with rich culture and history. Tell us a bit about what it's like to live in this amazing country.

Excellent food, great weather all the time, the people (especially from the north of the country) are quite social, humble and honest. Great places to visit and to spend a weekend relaxing. On the other hand, our average salary is really low comparing with most of the European countries but nothing pays the peace we can find here.

You re-entered elite in S48 with a young driver you'd trained yourself. Do you think it's possible to achieve optimal results through the divisions while training a driver, or will you inevitably be overwhelmed sometimes by managers who hire trained drivers from the market?

Managers who hire trained drivers are always at advantage. I like to win with drivers trained by myself but that’s just my style.

You seemed to be running well in elite for three seasons, but in S51 you selected BadYear tyres. What was the reason for this decision, and do you think it was the correct one?

I was without sponsors for season 51 because I lost them during season 50. The reasons and the circumstances that made me lost these sponsors during season 50 were all weird but… what can we do? :) A cheap tyre was the only possible option for season 51 and worked well. I made a podium and finish 4 sponsors to attack season 52.

BTW, there is no correct tyre option in Elite because the tyre performance is strongly dependent on the weather forecast. When works well it is always a lucky guess.

You recently released your long-term driver, who seems to be champion material. What do you think was the 'missing link' in your package that could have kept you in elite?

My last long term driver is currently the best GPRO driver. I spent too much time and money constructing the best one and, at the same time, others were hiring trained drivers saving money and time with that and investing that money in other parts. With my style, only a bit of luck can balance the losses but, again, got weird sponsor warnings and had huge losses. Between all losses, 2 of my sponsors left me after a pure random. :| I made a huge investment at the beginning of this season and was not possible to re-adjust the plan after losing so much money in sponsors.

At the end of S52 you gave us a clue about your intentions by hiring a master-level driver. Talk to us a little about your plans for the future in GPRO.

My main plan is to leave Elite ASAP and recover my passion for the game. Elite make some of us feel like idiots. :) Anyway, I am quite happy with everything I achieved with Dave Mcnish and was only missing some luck to achieve my goal. If I recover my passion for the game, then soon or later I will get that missing trophy on my career.

At the beginning of S51 you joined GA'ZADA F1. Tell us about your team mates, and what it's like being in the team.

GA’ZADA F1 is one of the oldest Portuguese teams. I meet all of them during my first Portuguese GPRO meeting and since then we never lost the contact. They live all relatively close to my city (more or less 100km) and sometimes we watch the race together which is really cool. It is a privilege to have them as my friends. :)

You currently run the Williams FW16 livery. Does this livery have special significance for you?

I am a Senna fan. He started the 1994 championship with this car… It is my humble way to do a kind of tribute every race to the driver I consider the best ever.

In the past you've been vocal about reducing the amount of success built on luck in GPRO. Tell us which areas you would change if you were in charge of the game, and how you would alter them.

There are so many these days… let’s talk about one of them:

The Q boost is absolutely unrealistic. In any motorsport, the differences between one good Q and one bad Q from the same driver is no more than 0,4/0,5s. Currently it is possible to have more than 1 second less Q time than the practice time (with top drivers). This essentially means that we currently have a mistake gap of more than 2s (that is completely random or we all believe it is). If we look at race 14 in Elite (season 51), we see that we have 2,1s between the 1st and the 15th. :|

Saying that, let us imagine that I am well prepared and 90% of the times I have excellent Qs then it is hard not to win or not to be on the top 3 at the end of each race. On the other hand, if I have 90% of the times really bad Qs then I am completely out of the top 10 at the end of each race.

If it was equal to everyone I would accept it without any problem (I mean, well distributed by each manager during one season) but unfortunately I spent two complete seasons seeing a team mate having 90% of the times really good Qs and seeing my driver doing 90% of the times really bad Qs. I have to say that I do not see any justice or fair game here.

What do you see in GPRO's future? Do you think that the game will flourish with the changes that Vlad has talked about introducing in the future?

The new live race screen seems to be a good addition and will definitely introduce more fun during the races. The fuel supplier idea IMO will be interesting only if does not work like a new random factor (like for example the tyre supplier with weather).

Any final words for the admins or community?

I would like to see an outside entity validating and certificating the game implementations and code if possible. I think all the GPRO community would appreciate that. :)

Many thanks for your time, Paulo, and those very interesting answers. Best of luck to you in your new plan.
