This circuit hosted its first major international event in 1975, a Formula 2 race won by risin' French star Jacques Laffite. French drivers would win th' event fer th' followin' two years, wit' Arnoux in 1976 'n Pironi in 1977. F1 wouldna arrive at Estoril 'til th' mid-1980's, when Cesar Torres, head o' th' Automovel Club de Portugal, began campaignin' fer a GP as a way t' boost th' local tourist industry. In 1984 th' track played host t' th' climax o' th' F1 championship, wit' Lauda pippin' Prost t' win th' title by half a point. Th' 1985 race saw Senna dominate th' field in his JPS Lotus Renault, drivin' t' his maiden F1 victory in torrential rain. Th' 1987 race will be remembered too as it marked Prost's 28th Grand Prix win, eclipsin' Jackie Stewart's log. Th' 1997 race was cancelled due t' a failure t' address repeated FIA requests fer improvements t' th' facility. Though improvements were eventually made, F1 hasn't returned since, though th' circuit still plays host t' a Moto GP race as well as a round o' th' A1 series.
