##Join

The game's idea looks interesting, so I'd be glad to join - if there is only any place left.
I understand some players invited by the game Author can have higher priority though...

In case my candidature is accepted, I'd name my team Olympus Highlanders (after Mons Olympus, after all it is the Martian Premier League, as I see in the picture above :D), and I'd ask for purple background with white characters.

If it is not, because of lack of places, then I wish all participants good luck, and hope to be able to join in some future season.

@Sonny Long (R91) Go ahead and name/color your team.

@Ricardo Antunes (A28) @Nicholas Bryant (A73) Are first on the list to replace an AWOL manager or just to join at a future time.

As it stands, I'm planning a baseline of one match per week (teamsheet due Friday's end of day CET). If it's going well, may increase.

Sonny, I mean no disrespect and I'm not TRYING to make it hard on you... but just for context:

Though, in order to keep it separate from this topic's original setting... we could move it to Mars in the future where cities are named after famous authors. Then you can make your own teams... (i.e. Bradbury United, Verne Athletic, Crichton City, etc.)

The thought was to 1) distinguish it from the original game in this topic (so, not using any of those names, like Thaern), and 2) at least give somewhat of a naming theme to the game. Pawel is the only one who didn't take an author's name, but very much tied it in to a Martian theme with the reference to Olympus Mons.

So maybe like, put an author's name before "Forest United"... like Verne Forest United or even just Faulkner Forest? (Or just take your favorite book, and use the author's name instead.) If you don't like books, you can always come up with something else (and I'm happy to help) but this time I just don't want Thaern in the name either. Sorry again!

But before we start, could you please concretize the exact rules?
E.g. I understand that playing home we could field players only in H (home team) or only in A (away team) columns.
But are there any limitations, how many? Or may I leave any of my columns uninhabited?
May I play without a goalie, but with 11 field players?
In the examples you have shown in the early phase of this thread, I don't remember a situation when any of the teams fielded anywhere players in a series of neighbouring squares (in a column), e.g. H3-4, H3-5 (or even H3-6 too). Is it just casually so, or you meant it as a rule, that between players there must be a pause always?
How should we send you our strategy for concrete match? As series of square names?: H1-1, H1-3, H2-3, H2-4, etc.?
Maybe someone else has got some other questions?

Ah, and is there any advantage playing home? If not (e.g. tournament is played in a neutral field, (e.g. in the Phobos moon base ;-)), then actually we don't need 10 rounds, but only 5.

These are the instructions/rules I posted before, and I've added just a couple :

Home and Away are listed at the top on the graphic in the bottom of post #104.

• GK is always default and cannot be changed. So each manager places ten players on the field for each match. Rows may contain up to 9 players or as few as 0 as long as 10 total are used.
• Teams earn "tactical points" for the positioning of their front four rows of players (but NOT H1 or A1).
• Tactical points are then converted to goals by the formula {RoundUp("tactical points"/3)-2}, and home teams earn 1 additional tactical point.
• All players are considered to be "facing" the goal they are attacking. Players behind them don't matter for their determination of tactical points.
– 0 Tactical points are earned if an opponent sits directly in front of the player.
– 1 Tactical point is earned if the square in front is open, but at least one forward diagonal contains an opponent.
– 3 Tactical points are earned if there is no defender in the forward adjacent three squares (two squares, for sideline position).
– Double Tactical points are earned by attackers in H5 and A5.
• Managers send the coordinates of the players for their chosen formation for a game to me, and I post the results!

-> https://i.imgur.com/nedJqgx.png

In this case:
• The three defenders in column H1 score no tactical points, because this row doesn't ever score any.
• The player in H3-B scores 3 because there are no defenders in the three squares of A3 that are right in front of it.
• H3-D and H3-F score 1 point each, because they are partially blocked by a diagonal defender.
• H3-H scores 0 points because it is directly blocked.
• H5-B scores 6 points because of no blockers and front row scoring double.
• H5-D scores 0 points because it is directly blocked.
• H5-F scores 2 points because of one diagonal defender, but doubled points for front row.

3+1+1+0+6+0+2 = 13 (+1 more if they are the home team).

13/3 = 4.3333 rounded up to 5 then -2 equals 3 goals.

No limitations. Can play 2-2-2-2-2 or 4-0-4-0-2 or 1-1-0-0-8 if you'd like.

No, haha

I was just trying to make them look realistic, but they don't have to look like a real formation. Players ARE ALLOWED to be side-by-side.

Yes, but if you look at the match graphics, there are coordinates on there (H1 to H5, A1 to A5, and A through I. So instead of H1-1, it should be H1-A.)

Hope that helps.

Matchday One

The inaugural season of the Martian Premier League kicked off with Camp Riordan hosting Flynn Association. The hosts, under the management of Shannon Fuerte looked to play the ball in wide areas at the start of the match. Spreading the field wide and hardly pushing any players through the middle, they hoped to go around the white-shirted defenders. The problem, however, was that Ricardo Antunes had also instructed his players to try playing wide around the opposition. What ensued was a rather comedic match with central defenders being given acres of space to dribble up the center of the pitch until they were tackled from all sides by closing wide players and onrushing opposing defenders. Thus, numerous fouls in central areas and small bits of space found in the corners by the most advanced wingers for both teams characterized a rather ridiculous 0-0 draw to open the season.

-> https://i.imgur.com/L6OGAgo.png

Woolf United and Olympus Highlanders contested the second match, with spectators hopeful of a slightly more successful attacking display compared to the season opener. They were not disappointed. Pawel Gierech set up a decently compact group of six somewhat defensive players, the front of which found wide open field in front of him every time the Highlanders went on the counter. The hosts, managed by Ania Piekarska, left only two players in defensive positions, and controlled their own defensive midfield despite FOUR fully attacking opponents. The purple shirts of Gierech's Highlanders were lethal on the counter, with the front man of their back six distributing to advantageous numbers in attacking areas. But... Woolf United were just too dominant in the game for the visitors, controlling the match and forcing play into attacking areas for large positions of the match. Despite a strong showing from the visitors and a late comeback, the hosts held on to win by one in a seven-goal thriller.

-> https://i.imgur.com/4PRNBQz.png

Crewe Dumas and Twain City closed out opening day with a classic red against blue showdown. Richard Paukson's instructions were evident from the first. A very disciplined, compact structure in a rough 3-4-0-3, allowing three players freedom of the attacking third. Twain City's right defensive player, instructed by Chew Kai Wen to push higher up the field, found success in closing the space for both left-sided attacking players of the hosts. It was Crewe Dumas' third attacker though, on the right wing, who caused all sorts of problems for the visiting defense. Twain City were ultimately a bit too compact in central defensive areas, finding some space and success in the center of midfield, but ultimately being outplayed by the strong defensive midfield shape of the host team.
