Surely you blokes aren't proud of the dive that resulted in the penalty that gave England the win?
I'd be too embarrassed to cheer too loudly.

Exactly, this is why I'm personally supporting Italy in the final, I can't possibly support a team that dives.

Funny that nobody mentions the Denmark freekick was soft like the penalty (imo neither were fouls) and the goal itself should have been disallowed due to attackers not being the required distance from the wall.

Also did Denmark not beat the Czech Republic by 1 goal, which came from a corner that was clearly not a corner (and the player knew it obviously) Surprised Denmark didn't just pull out of the tournament there and then for fair play and their fans should not have celebrated once seeing the replay.

Doesn't mean it was a good decision. Also, I believe most people probably hate England for its fans, not the players.

They were in the beach and Yugoslavia broke apart or something like that, and they went to win it.

They were actually monitoring the situation in Yugoslavia. That's just an urban legend that arose later.

Neither of these were reviewable though. The reason people are angry about the pen was because it wasn't overturned by VAR. And scoring from a free kick or corner is significantly harder than from a penalty.

To be honest, every game will have this kind of decision (the diving and writhing on the floor in agony from all sides when their feelings are hurt is one of the reasons I don't watch much footy)

Hand of God, anyone?

But if you have this Video review system, use it properly at least.

On the balance of play, England deserved the win and at least they tried to win it in normal time too. Denmark seemed way too passive, either playing for penalties or exhausted

Well I'm sure the experts from VAR with help of video replay and the referee, are far more qualified to make that decision, rather than you or I.

That opinion differs to yours, so who's right?

The game should've been whistled off anyway already before the incident, since there was a second ball pretty much affecting the game.

The better team won, the way they won was shit.

Sure, but either way the goal shouldn't count so it's irrelevant. And if the goal was scored as a direct result of the decision, it doesn't matter whether it's harder to score from or not.

If this had happened, it would almost certainly not be talked about at all/celebrated and everyone would be praising Denmark for how they defended rather than call it a disgrace :)

Scoring from a free kick or corner is significantly harder than from a penalty. False calls like this happen, and if VAR was made to stop those particular situations then it would've been given the power to intervene.

My question was directed specifically at Shaun. But as someone with no stake in this, it would have sucked to see either team winning with a goal like that.

Quite understandable to be honest. Usually the players are quite dislikable too but the current group seem to be a decent bunch, as is the manager. Makes a nice change.

Personally I would have preferred England not to get that penalty, as it felt like they were going to score anyway and it would have felt a lot less lucky that way.

As for the VAR call, they've been told not to overrule unless they can be certain, and as much as I hate the expression "there was contact" as a desperate excuse for athletes falling over, ultimately from a VAR perspective that is a crucial element - you can only definitively say it was a dive if there was no contact at all. I was a bit puzzled that the referee wasn't asked to review on a monitor, but it seems they're not keen on doing that this time, perhaps for red card decisions only.

Personally, I think if he stayed up from that first contact, the second contact would have been a stonewall penalty. He avoided the brunt of that second contact by allowing himself to fall on that initial contact.

You know what? Italy deserved the win tonight. They were the better team on the day, and on another night they win that in 90 minutes. After our fast start where we played some very nice stuff, we offered very little and looked a totally different team. Our last 3 penalties were also absolutely awful.

Congrats to all you Italians on GPRO, enjoy the victory!

What's not needed, however, is people with absolutely no affiliation to Italy whatsoever revelling in our disappointment 'because it's the English'. Just let us be disappointed without rubbing our noses in it. Thanks. ;)
