COMBAT: StarTrek
Space - the final frontier. This is the COMBAT version of the StarTrek universe, your mission – to boldly guide your home-world to domination and explore where no human, Vulcan, Klingon (or whichever species) has gone before!
This game will be a slight departure from the normal COMBAT games in that there is much more to the game than just the standard fighting and moving; you must develop your civilisation to the extent that you can afford to adventure into space, complete missions and aim for domination. This will require balancing invention, taxation, war and diplomacy to further your quest as you trek through the stars of the…

The Phases of COMBAT: StarTrek
Phase 1 - Development
Initially the game will be a development race, with all races starting equally under-developed. As such you will decide how quickly you evolve in several fields:
• Space exploration • Military defences • Military weapons • Wealth acquisition • Population satisfaction
Once a period of 50 years (10 years = 1 week) has elapsed (or the 1st warp-capable Space Shuttle is built – whichever comes first) the game will move into phase 2, which will still encompass the elements of phase 1, but introduce some new choices into the mix.
Phase 2 – Your continuing mission…
In this phase, once your race has a warp capable spaceship you will be able to discover missions that will lead you to earn various new technologies, money or alliances. You will need to continue building your empire, but in this phase we will begin to see the first battles emerging.
Phase 3 – The war to end all wars
Once we are far enough through the game, I will decide to end the game with an all-out war, pitting planetary alliances against one another, in one final glorious battle!

The Game-Play
You will get your own Google Doc where you can see your current status in terms of Population, Satisfaction and Gold (more on those in the next post), along with what Development areas you can invest in. To see an example of a sheet you can go here (Kazon are not a race in the game FYI) – https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1J-F1Z0BJmAa7i6HvIIha... while a screenshot from the summary page of that same Google Doc is as follows:
https://i.imgur.com/pMmsxBQ.jpg
Phase 1
IMPORTANT – In ALL PHASES you are not allowed to PM other players about the game unless otherwise specified!
Phase 1 – 10 StarTrek years = 1 real-life week
In phase 1 you have the following areas to invest in on a (real-life) bi-weekly basis – these deadlines coincide with GPRO race days on Tuesdays and Fridays:
• Space exploration o New ships o Improved propulsion o Communication/sensor arrays • Military defences o Shields o Improved hull materials o Cloaking technology • Military weapons o Energy weapons o Torpedoes o Cannons • Wealth acquisition (improve the amount your society has to spend) • Population satisfaction (improve how happy your population are to work on your projects)
It will take a little while for your civilisation to build up the capability to adventure to other planets, even if you aim to do so immediately.
Phase 2
Phase 2 – 5 StarTrek years = 1 real-life week
In phase 2 you have the following actions to perform twice weekly (again deadlines coinciding with the GPRO race days):
Invest (as with phase 1) Negotiate – Try to form alliances with other races (this is normally done in just 1 turn, unless otherwise specified in your race summary page) Move – Re-deploy your resources/military elsewhere Attack – Attack other spaceships or planets (NB – planets have a health of 80 before they surrender and accrue 1 health point back per 1m population every turn, as the population rebuilds. ALSO your attack value is determined by the highest level weapon in each weapon category added together)
If two races try to negotiate an alliance, any delays in negotiation caused by their instincts will be multiplied together (e.g. a race that takes 4x as long to negotiate and one that takes 2x as long to negotiate would take 8 turns to reach an alliance agreement).
Please note – for two races to negotiate they must have representatives (i.e. at least 1 ship) in the same physical location for the duration of negotiations. There is no actual negotiating done between players – it is simply a matter of having both races present for the number of turns required. Once an alliance is formed they can offer each other gold and various technological advancements.
Please also note the following around developments vs ships being off planet:
Quote ( Jonathan Beagles @ September 23rd 2021,00:19:15 ) - Any development you make will automatically be applied to each ship UNTIL a ship leaves your planet - As soon as the ship leaves the planet, development will cease until the ship returns to your home planet - When they return all developments done since they left will be added automatically (note for this you must actually go back to your planet and not just be next to it)
Please also note how it works with ships that can move faster than Warp 1:
Quote ( Jonathan Beagles @ October 2nd 2021,21:20:38 ) You will move the whole way and scan from your finishing point (i.e. not as you travel). You don't have to go the full distance if you don't want.
If anything is in your way, then you will stop (as in, you will lose the rest of the move figures) and be notified though!
Please note the following clarification around attacks/turns...
Quote ( Jonathan Beagles @ October 9th 2021,02:29:13 ) When 2 (or more) races are in a COMBAT with each other, then it is simply a case of taking it in turns to attack each other. As long as all parties are submitting attack orders then there can be as many attacks as are submitted during the turn (in theory hundreds!).
HOWEVER...
If 1 party is not submtting orders then the amount of free attacks the other party will receive will increase when ATTACKING in consecutive turns. As follows:
1st turn without response = 1 attack 2nd turn without response = 2 attacks 3rd turn without response = 3 attacks etc. etc.
As such, not responding (as planets never will) shall soon add up even from a small ship ATTACK!
Phase 3
Phase 3 – 1 StarTrek day = 1 real-life day
In phase 3 you have the following actions to perform twice weekly (once more, deadlines coinciding with GPRO race days):
Move (as with phase 2) Attack (as with phase 2)
No further investment is allowed in Phase 3.

Development Areas
Everyone begins with the following:
Population – 1 million Satisfaction – 50/100 Gold – 1 million
Population is how many people are on your planet, this will increase by 1/5 every turn (unless otherwise specified) Satisfaction is how happy the people on your planet are, this will be affected by various events Gold is the money in this game; at the end of every turn you will receive gold equal to the amount of the following formula:
(Population x Satisfaction)/50

The StarTrek Universe
For the sake of moves each square (which you will see on the maps when provided – or can see on the Kazon example sheet ‘Map’ tab) shall be considered to be 1 light year, and for the sake of simplicity it will take 1 move to travel 1 light at year at Warp 1. Impulse speed will be considered to be Warp 0.5. This will all become clearer once you see a map of your area.
You will only see a map of your own planet and know which quadrant you are based in to begin with, but space exploration will lead you to other worlds/civilisations as you go through the game.
The following StarTrek races are already taken by former (and some new) players:
Andorian (ELIMINATED - 11th) - André de Carvalho Antaran (ELIMINATED - 17th) - Rocco Stallone Bajoran (ELIMINATED - 7th) - Xavier Porta Bolian (ELIMINATED - 6th) - Matthew Standen Borg (ELIMINATED - 15th) - Liviu Sandu Breen (ELIMINATED - 9th) - Michael Monaco Cardassian (ELIMINATED - 23rd) - Nicholas Bryant Denobulan (ELIMINATED - 18th) - Ania Piekarska Dominion (ELIMINATED - 16th) - Chew Kai Wen El’Aurian (ELIMINATED - 12th) - Massimo D'amico Ferengi (ELIMINATED - 26th) - Rocco Stallone Human (WINNER - 1st!) - Tim Wagner Ilari (ELIMINATED - 14th) - Jun Ho Jem’Hadar (ELIMINATED - 2nd) - Bert Meeus Klingon (ELIMINATED - 8th) - Daryl Gee Orion (ELIMINATED - 3rd) - Archit Modi Reman (ELIMINATED - 19th) - Nicholas Bryant Romulan (ELIMINATED - 13th) - Cezary Skonieczny Talaxian (ELIMINATED - 5th) - Ivelin Dobrev Tellarite (ELIMINATED - 10th) - Mairo Toom Tholian (ELIMINATED - 21st) - Ania Piekarska Vulcan (ELIMINATED - 4th) - Ricardo Antunes
For new players, to begin with all you need to do is select your Top 3 preferences on civilisations to represent, as detailed in the following list:
Betazoid (ELIMINATED - 27th) Gorn (ELIMINATED - 24th) Krenim (EIMINATED - 20th) Ktarian (ELIMINATED - 25th) Lurian (ELIMINATED - 30th) Nausicaan (ELIMINATED - 28th) Trill (ELIMINATED - 29th) Xindi (ELIMINATED - 22nd)
This means a total of up to 30 players can take part (with 17 already confirmed), with any non-competing civilisations being controlled by me! Order of choice will be dictated by who had the species in the previous edition and then by order of ##Join post in the thread. There is no significant advantage to be had by one race over the other, though all will have different special characteristics that may be a help or a hindrance!

"Hello...well, we meet again. I'm sure for you all it felt like nearly a decade...well, for me it was barely a moment! All I've had time to do since we last met was floss...and not all that thoroughly, but then - with teeth as perfect as this - can you blame me?!?
I've heard rumours of some of you saying you haven't heard of something called "StarTrek" and you're worried (boo-hoo). Well, I wouldn't worry about it, it's hardly relevant in the grand scheme of things. I've been around for 87 Q years (roughly 8.7 Kigajigamillion earth years) and I can tell you that this "StarTrek" thing matters about as much as probiotic yoghurt. Or Piers Morgan.
The point is, I'm eager to see all of you puny mortals fall over yourselves in your attempts to "develop a civilisation" (I'll try not to laugh too hard at those attempts - but no promises...) and...
...oh it's you...
...what do you want?...
...what? Oh fine, yes I'll tell them...
JB (what a silly name - does he think we don't know he's called Jon in his real life???) has asked me to pass along that there are 2 spaces left for civilisations to get involved and bla bla bla something about it being fun.
Anyway, I'm off to contemplate the meaning of life, the universe and everything - should take me about 2 of your earth days and then I shall likely return to do see your efforts begin, and if you're lucky I might even share that answer with you...we'll see...!!!"

FYI 1st deadline will go from Tuesday 7th until Tuesday 14th September and from there on in it will be GPRO Race Days. Just conscious that some may not have time to adapt to the game starting so quickly PLUS I'm on holiday so might not have time to wrap a Game Day up next week!

1 space remaining for the ideal number of players - game will start tomorrow, though anyone can join up until Tuesday 14th September and they won't be left behind!

#join . This game seems to be complicated , but good.

I promise that once you start playing it will make way more sense :)
Welcome @Xavier Porta (P6) next steps PM on the way...

1 over the optimal amount of players, we need to drop cargo xD

you for example? :P

Haha there are spaces for up to 14 more players - I really meant the "ideal minimum" tbh. The game will work well with any number from 15-30. The more players, the more chances of alliances and battles happening earlier is all! :)

i shall conquer your feeble species before you even blink!

Will you be getting revenge for F1FG ? :D

#Join ... but I hope that if I don't have time to be present at every stage, I won't upset anyone. Honestly it looks interesting and anyway something other than what I've played before.

If you were to miss a deadline you would just fall a little behind the development pace, it wouldn't impact anyone else...
Welcome @Liviu Sandu (A72) - PM with next steps on the way!

"Oh goody, I do love a game, don't you? This one should be especially good, seeing as you're all going to try your hardest to win and yet I bet some of you can't even develop a small barn, let alone a warp-capable spaceship! I just have to click my fingers and I can create them - see *clicks fingers and starship appears* and here *clicks again, another starship appears* and this one is purple *clicks again and a purple starship appears*. Yay.
Anyway, enough of my cosmic capabilities - back to this game, you're all now allowed to start developing your civilisation (if you can call it that...I'm looking at you, Klingons!) and I'll update you with which of you are doing the best after each update period.
We start today in the year 2150 (it's actually my 1,000,000,000,000,000th birthday in fact - and I bet none of you even baked me a cake!) and I'm so looking forward to your feeble efforts I'll even give you a hint to start off...
Develop something in each area, rather than just focusing in one specific area - you'll thank me later!
Oh, it's you...AGAIN.
What do you want this time?
Fine, yes I'll tell them - "JB" (yuk) has said that there are still spaces in the game and something about how he'd like to get 17 more players bla bla bla, he does go on doesn't he!?!
And now to officially kick things off...how does it go again...oh yes:
Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of various civilisations. Your multi-year mission: to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilisations. To boldly go where no [insert your race type here] has gone before!!!"
