Italy and the Netherlands go man-to-man in the 1st half, with the emphasis really on the defences maintaining possession. A draw is enough for the Dutch to advance, but likely not as Group Winners to get a favourable tie in the Round of 16.
As such, neither side looks eager to push forward too much - resulting in a fairly turgid opening 45 minutes without a single shot on target...

An early raid by the Anguillan forwards sees Morgan take aim and almost give the Anguillans the lead...but his shot is tipped onto the bar by the Albanian goalkeeper and the score stays at 0-0. However, this proves to be a sign of things to come...
...as Morgan does open the scoring a little later on, with a wonderful Cruyff turn to give him the space to stroke home a 0-1 advantage. Carpenter later on manages to power home a header to make it 0-2 and - presuming they can stay in front - confirm their place in top spot of the group

The USA need a victory to 100% confirm their place in the next round, though a draw might be enough (presuming Hungary don't shock Germany) - as such, they seem to be betting on the Germans to take victory with an approach that has just a single forward in the shape of Reyna...but the US Captain is marked so heavily that there is nothing he can do to put the US in front.
As such, it's 0-0 at half-time with Morocco's chances of moving out of last place in the group still alive too...

The Bahamas know that only a win will suffice against the Swiss to see them advance to the knockout stages - however, despite their excellent efforts the pressure on sole striker Julmis to score proves too much, as he blazes a couple of straighforward chances over the bar!
Late in the half, the Bahamas pressure does start to force the Swiss into mistakes - as they give possession away cheaply, which allows Delancy to take a snap-shot on sight that almost flies into the top right-hand corner of the net, if it wasn't for a world class save by the Swiss goalkeeper!!!
0-0 then, with the Bahamas fate depending on their ability to score in normal time in the 2nd half...

The Welsh almost certainly require victory against Croatia in order to get through to the knockout stages, as a draw would only be enough if Bulgaria were to lose to Peru by 2 clear goals (and even then it would come down to goals scored!) - as such a risky 1st half strategy employed by Wales sees them drop deep and look for the odd counter-attacking opportunity.
However, it's Croatia that have the best chance of the half when Kramarić goes clear and has a 1v1 with Hennessey that the Welsh goalkeeper manages to get the better of by sticking out a foot to divert the Croatian strikers' goalbound effort wide! 0-0 at half-time then - which won't really suit either team...

Norway are overwhelmed by the high press that India use, with Chhetri opening the scoring in the 4th minute thanks to a pin-point Martins cross that he manages to divert goalward past the Norwegian goalkeeper!
He slots in Pandita late on in the half to try and grab a 2nd but the keeper makes the save on that occasion to keep the scoreline at 0-1...and give India hope of advancing as group leaders, if they can just grab one more goal than Sri Lanka in the 2nd half...

England and Brazil meet in a crucial match here, with Brazil all but guaranteed a place in the knockout stages - but by no means guaranteed top spot - and with England needing to win to advance in all likelihood...!
That creates a frenetic atmosphere, with an end-to-end half and plenty of chances for both sides. Brazil open the scoring though, with Firmino pushing the ball past Maguire before finding the bottom left-hand corner of the net with a well-drilled strike - though they are pegged back almost immediately by Foden...
...the English midfielder manages to cut inside his marker (Lodi) and curl a sublime effort just inside the post to give Alisson no chance of stopping it whatsoever - but England fail to capitalise on that momentum, given that Kane in particular is being marked out of contention.
As such, it is Brazil who add to their goal tally, with Paquetá chancing a long-range effort that Pope sees late and can only push further into his own net! Firmino grabs his 2nd of the game shortly afterwards when he manages to slide home a Ribeiro cross, which in turn gives Brazil a 1-3 advantage!
However, despite the excellent job that Thiago Silva has done in marking Kane this half, he does lose him at a late corner - which is drifted in by Chilwell and powered home by Kane, who doesn't miss those!!! 2-3 at half-time then in what is quickly turning into a World Cup classic...

Speaking of World Cup classics, this one has all the makings of it - with Greece desperate for a big win to keep their hopes of qualification alive, while Turkey are group leaders and will want to hold on to top spot by avoiding defeat here!
As such, Greece come out with real intent early on - their forwards combine really effectively, with Giakoumakis dropping back a little in order to be able to assist his strike partners...and that works brilliantly at first, with Tasos Donis picking up a through ball from the play-maker and stroking it home before Fountas likewise manages to pick up a similar pass and blast the ball through the legs of Çakır in the Turkish goal.
Meanwhile the Greek defence have a problem of their own to face, with Tosun proving a particular nuisance in the air and managing to get one back for the Turks thanks to a Çalhanoğlu cross into the box...and he even then levels it up for 2-2, though the 2nd is a low strike from the edge of the box!
However, Greece are still generally superior with Giakoumakis playing a 1-2 with Fountas, before the latter manages to square the ball across for a Tasos Donis tap-in - and they then go 4-2 up thanks to an in-swinging corner by Limnios that Fountas manages to chest down and then volley home spectacularly!!!
Then, with the final attack of the half, Turkey get one last opportunity...Antalyalı puts a ball into the box that Tosun manages to head back into the mixer, before Yazıcı shoots (!) - and sees his shot parried by Paschalakis...but only as far as - guess who - Tosun, who completes his hat-trick and keeps Turkey in touch with a 4-3 half-time scoreline!

The Faroe Islands and Uzbekistan play out a fairly bleak opening 45 minutes, with neither side eager to over-extend themselves as both are into the knockout stages already.
Although, with top spot still on the line, there are definitely players out there who are giving more than others to try and achieve that...and despite a few long-range efforts from such players, the game looks set to be 0-0 at half-time.
However, a late Faroe Islands attack sees Vatnhamar drag the ball back for the on-rushing E Nielsen to power low and hard past the dive of Lobanov to make it 1-0 and put the Faroes one step closer to achieving top spot in the group...

Singapore start the half with the required intensity to the put the US Virgin Islands under pressure - with Quak spearheading the attacking efforts, as he hurdles an early Smith Jr. challenge before powering his strike into the top left-hand corner...and he adds a 2nd shortly afterwards with a low strike after he gets played in by Hanapi.
Harun manages to jump highest to head home an Arifin corner and make it 0-3, putting the US Virgin Islands under real pressure...but the pressure of the World Cup (as we have seen for the past two seasons) is what the islanders thrive upon!!! They come back into it fairly quickly, as Dennis makes his presence known with an incredible bicycle kick from a Taylor cross - before doubling his tally with a sublime back-heel that catches Sunny in the Singapore goal out completely!
The US Virgin Islands leave it a few more minutes before grabbing another quick-fire double, this time with Blaschka powering home a long-range effort through a crowd of bodies before Dennis produces another moment of magic for his hat-trick, with a brilliantly controlled half-volley that keeps rising even after it hits the back of the net!!!
4-3 up and when Dennis claims his 2nd of the game (with a header from a Humphrey cross) the writing appears to be on the wall for Singapore...but they dig deep and a 43rd minute Harun header from a Nazari ball into the box looks to have kept them right in the mix at 5-4 down.
However, a late final surge forward for the US Virgin Islands sees Christean go 1v1 with Sunny...and a moment of madness by the Singaporean goalkeeper sees him take the forwards legs out, with the referee ignoring the Singaporean players' complaints to point to the spot - and Dennis steps up to make it 6-4 and put the US Virgin Islands with one foot in the knockout stages already...

Mexico know that a draw here vs Hong Kong would be enough to see them advance...but despite a half of pressure from Hong Kong, it is Mexico that manage to soak it up to seemingly head in at 0-0.
However, a late chance does present itself for Hong Kong - with Law running with the ball into a 1v1 situation with Ochoa and pushing it past the keeper to leave himself with an open goal...but he has run into an incredibly oblique angle and sees his strike hit the side netting to keep Hong Kong requiring a goal in the 2nd half.

France do not seem as bothered about topping the group as Belgium do, with both sides already confirmed as progressing to the Round of 16 (plus the Belgians smarting from their 8-3 loss in the B League Final!). As such, Lukaku has a sublime game where he is simply unplayable for long periods! The rangey Belgian forward manages a brace of headers early on, with one from a Dendoncker corner and another from a de Bruyne free-kick into the box (conceded by a rash Varane challenge).
Varane does redeem himself a little, when he manages to play Mbappé into a 1v1 situation where the French forward lifts the ball over the on-rushing Courtois to make it 1-2 overall. Griezmann does pull the French briefly level, when he skips past a Vertonghen lunge to then toe-poke his strike past Courtois for 2-2...
...but Belgium's intensity and focus moves them out of sight before half-time, when their pressure sees France concede a free-kick that Eden Hazard steps up to curl home - before Lukaku completes a 1st half hat-trick of headers with a looping effort that completely wrong-foots Lloris for a 2-4 half-time scoreline!

If there were any doubts as to whether the Estonians could finish off the job that their 3-9 win over Greece set in motion, when they face Egypt they put those to rest almost immediately!
Liivak scores a powerful low strike from the edge of the box for 1-0, before he turns playmaker moments later to put a through-ball into the path of Tunjov who takes it 1st time to stun the Egyptian goalkeeper and make it 2-0 within the opening 7 minutes!!!
Egypt do manage to steady the ship, but Estonia are playing with a composure and preventing Egypt from getting into any kind of a rhythm - they add a 3rd in the 35th minute with a Sorga strike, which evades everyone as it bounces through a set of bodies and finds its way into the bottom left-hand corner! To fully confirm their dominance, Liivak grabs his 2nd with a header from a Vassiljev corner to make it 4-0 at half-time and all but confirm their place in the knockout stages with hope of top spot very much still alive...

Germany know that a loss here could dent their knockout stage hopes - but they cope admirably with the early pressure from a fired-up Hungarian side! All of that early energy and intensity from Hungary simply pales in comparison to the Germans' composure and ability to pick a pass...
...and it is just such a pass that puts Hungary in real difficulties, as a ball over the top by Rüdiger finds Werner in space, who cuts inside to shoot - and gets hacked downby by an over-eager Auerbach, giving the referee no hesitation in pointing to the spot! Werner steps up and converts the penalty he won by sending Auerbach the wrong way for a 1-0 lead.
After that it is all Germany, who barely find their way out of 2nd gear but still manage to put Hungary under considerable pressure - as the phrase "headless chickens" could easily apply to Hungary in this 1st half! Sane torments the Hungarian defence with a side-footed shot from a Kroos pass, before grabbing his 2nd of the game just before the half-time whistle with a sublime low strike through a crowd of bodies for a 3-0 half-time lead!!!

Slightly more work rate in the 2nd half sees the Turks & Caicos put Iceland under a little more pressure and makes it a more even game, but that seems to cause both sides to become a little more cautious in their attacking play...
...and so the match finishes as it started; goalless, though with Iceland picking up their 1st and only point of the tournament and Turks and Caicos going through in 2nd place in their group - but that may mean a tougher draw in the next round! That said, it's an incredible achievement for this tiny island nation to even reach that stage in the tournament - so everything else is just a bonus!
Rumour has it that a contract offer will be on the way to Guardian for next season at least...!

At 1-0 up and up against a partizan home crowd, Argentina are really up against it in this 2nd half - but a change to a more attacking formation and more freedom for Messi on the ball proves a masterstroke by Chatzikonstantinou, as that releases the little wizard to be able to do what he does best!
He opens the scoring for the Argentines with a perfectly timed volley that was still rising even as it hit the back of the net, with a 2nd goal shortly afterwards to ease Argentine nerves and silence the home crowd. Messi is involved in their final goal as well, as he manages to leave two Uruguayan defenders on the ground before cutting the ball back to Paredes, who nips in ahead of his marker to divert the ball home for a brilliant 1-3 victory!!!
That means that a Brazilian win would see Argentina progress alongside them, while the only way they could now miss out is if England can defeat Brazil by 3 clear goals...

Romania cap off an excellent group stage with victory against group whipping boys Australia, who finish both pointless and goalless, never looking likely to progress. Meanwhile the key goal here is scored by Pușcaș, as he turns his defender inside and out before arrowing his strike past the stranded goalkeeper for a 1-0 victory!
Romania will now take on 2nd place in Group B, which is massively up in the air right now between Brazil, Argentina and England...
