International Cup for F1 Manufacturers

Points are awarded on an 8–6–4–3–2 basis to the first five finishers at each race. However, a manufacturer only receives points for its highest placed car and only the best five results from the eight races are retained.

Current standings are as follows:

https://i.imgur.com/up3K253.jpg

Ferrari were confirmed as Champions long before, though Cooper will be delighted to hold onto 2nd position - with Porsche into an impressive 3rd position after a very strong season for them capped off by a double podium! That means Maserati sink to 4th overall after an uncharacteristically difficult season for the Italians - though they do at least keep BRM behind them in the top half of the table.

In the lower half, Aston Martin make an impressive debut season happen with several Top 10 positions ensuring they finish 6th overall, while Vanwall must go back to the drawing board in 7th ahead of the other debutants JBW, who finish a very respectable 8th from Connaught saying farewell in 9th and then finally Lotus, who rather tailed off at the end of the season, in 10th and last position.

Managing Your Budget

You start with a budget that’s set based on previous performances from the team and using what we know of the teams’ finances in 1959 in real life – this will be PM’d to each Team Principal. You can take the team into negative money, but the consequences of doing so will be as follows:

• Paying interest on the negative amount to the tune of £1,000 per day you’re in negative
• Only being able to field cars in championship races, so no non-championship/F2 races for your drivers
• Not being able to make any new car parts until you’re back in positive
• If you finish the season in negative money you will be automatically sacked as Team Principal before the 1960 season. If you are one of the top drivers you can still apply for a role as a Team Principal, but not with the same team.

The things you can spend money on are as follows:

Drivers (see post #5)
Staff (see post #6)
Suppliers (See post #7)
Car development (See post #8)
Pit-Crew (See post #9)
Weather equipment (See post #10)

The only other expenditures possible are one-off items, as follows:

Signing Drivers

Initial driver confirmations have already been completed by PM. Now ALL DRIVERS in the game will agree their salaries with the Team Principal, and both should send me a copy of the contract filled in identically:

Driver Name –
Team Name –
Contract Length – X seasons
Signing Bonus – £X
Salary – £X
Contribution (the amount the driver is going to give towards the team’s development) – £X

Go to post #4 in the main thread (https://gpro.net/gb/forum/ViewTopic.asp?TopicId=29185#scroll) to see the full list of drivers – new signings will be updated regularly in that thread.

Multiplier Limits

To ensure fair competition each team will have to respect the multiplier limit – this is calculated by looking at the average multiplier across the F1R 1959 field and adding 0.15 then multiplying by the number of drivers. This season the limit for your top 3 drivers was worked out as follows:

56 drivers
59.73 total multiplier
Average is 1.066
Add 0.15 and multiply by 3 means…

The Multiplier limit for 1959 is 3.6 for your Top 3 Drivers

Please note that if we have enough people join to allow 4th drivers that they will not be affected by the multiplier limit.

Also - please note that you MUST fill all 3 roster spots (as long as the game has 30 players in it).

Signing Staff

All Team Principals will be able to submit bids for the Staff they want until the 1st deadline, which will be at Friday 3rd January at 18:00 CET. Subsequent deadlines will be advised once the 1st deadline has been reached. Here is what happens in each possible scenario:

0 bids in Round 1

Any Staff Members with 0 bids on them will slightly lower their expectations for the next round of bidding, which will take place simultaneously with the other Round 2 bids.

1 bid in Round 1

At this point any Staff Members with just 1 bid on them (that is at least their minimum required salary) will sign a contract.

2 bids in Round 1

Any Staff Members with 2 bids on them will move to the 2nd round of bidding, which is where both bidders will be informed of the highest current offer and be given one more chance to improve on that offer. If the 2nd round is tied, then the highest bidder in Round 1 will sign the contract. If both rounds were tied, then the team that were HIGHER in last season’s championship standings will sign the contract.

3+ bids in Round 1

Any Staff Members with 3 bids or more on them will move to the 2nd round of bidding MINUS the lowest bidder. Any ties will again be decided in favour of the team that were HIGHER in last season’s championship standings. This process will continue until we reach a round where only 2 bidders remain and then the above scenario for “2 bids” will play out – any ties will be decided by looking at the highest bids in the latest round each time.

The current Staff Market looks like this:

https://i.imgur.com/9dJB2NY.jpg

Poaching Staff

At any point you can pay twice the value of a staff member’s contract and they will automatically come to work for you for the rest of the season. These moves cannot be stopped – and once a staff member has been poached they cannot move to another team in that same season.

Suppliers

You will design your own engine, gearbox and chassis, so don’t need suppliers for those – but you do need to source the following:

• Tyres
• Brakes

You should choose from the following manufacturers before the season starts – please note that the values relate to 1-year contracts only (longer or shorter contracts are not possible):

https://i.imgur.com/CZmADAC.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/kmQXraM.jpg

Contract termination is possible – though you will not receive any refund for doing so and will have to pay a full season cost to your new supplier, regardless of when the change takes place.

Loyalty Bonus

If you stay with the same supplier as you had last season then you will receive a 10% reduction in their standard prices for the 1959 season. This applies to both tyres and brakes.

Car Development

Much like in real life, different cars will suit different tracks. This is more important this season than ever before! You will be able to invest in 3 different car parts to affect how your car performs in each race…these parts are as follows:

• Engine (affects top speed)
• Gearbox (affects acceleration)
• Chassis (affects handling)

Please note that when you “buy” one of these parts, you are actually fitting them to all of your cars. You can sell engines etc to other teams and agree a price between you (both should send a PM confirming the final price and what part is being sold).

You cannot sell a part back to the supplier once you buy it; but you can keep multiple levels of each part (if you have a factory) and fit whichever you wish for each race. Without a factory any new parts you buy will replace old ones, which you will lose for £0 when the next race starts (unless you sell them before).

You are also able to invest in parts for your car next season (which is more obviously worth it this season). Given the anticipated depreciation of part values is 2 levels, it is worthwhile considering that as the season wears on!

Prices for these parts are as follows:

Pit Crew

Your pit crew are a living breathing organism, who you need to manage effectively. For a new team they will start out at 1/10 skill and 5/10 motivation, for an existing team their levels will be set based on what they were at in the final race of last season – generally speaking, the higher both of those are the quicker your pit-stops will be.

Each race you can do any 1 action:

• Light pit-stop training
• Medium pit-stop training
• Heavy pit-stop training

Please note – once you reach 10/10 on both Motivation and Skill you will automatically start to promote your pit-crew through the following hierarchy (though there’ll be some short-term effects of doing so):

• Crew Chief
• Race Engineer
• Technical Director

The benefits of each can be seen in the Staff Market post above (post #6) – please note that you must have a replacement Crew Chief lined up before you can promote one to a Race Engineer. As such for a time you would have to operate with 2 Crew Chiefs; this will not double the effectiveness of the Crew Chief role, as the other will revert to being Assistant Crew Chief until such time as the first becomes a Race Engineer. This principle applies all the way up the ladder (though 2+ Race Engineers do allow you to improve 2+ different Driver’s multipliers).

Keeping Your Drivers Informed

With no radios the only way to reach your drivers is through pit-boards but in the race they are driving too fast to see them. As such it’s only in qualifying where you can have an effect.

To let them know about track conditions you can purchase a weather station, which you can make more accurate (in a similar principal to the way you purchase car development). The price of this is here:

https://i.imgur.com/LybVn82.jpg

Getting this information to the driver is up to you – it will appear on your Team Sheet, but how you communicate this to your team is your responsibility.

From this season onwards you will be able to see both the Qualifying and Race weather from the very start of the session.

Breaking News:

Ferrari have confirmed their promotion of David Yorke from Race Engineer to Technical Director; Team Principal Tim Wagner is said to be delighted with the work Yorke had been doing with von Trips thus far this season and sees this as a logical progression for the ex-Vanwall man.

Yorke himself is said to be so pleased with the promotion that he has committed his future to Ferrari, and has confirmed that no offer made this season will entice him away from the Italian marque.

Elsewhere in the Ferrari garage there are misgivings, however, as the other crew members seem disillusioned with the lack of attention they are receiving - and several of them quit, while those remaining seem incredibly unhappy! This is not helped by designer Jack Bauer seemingly lacking any motivation to work hard and distracting some of his fellow staff members*!!!

* NB - this is just flavour. Designer motivation and Staff motivation are not actually linked.

Breaking News:

Maserati have also confirmed a promotion in time for the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, as former driver and F1R legend Bob Gerard quickly goes from Crew Chief to Race Engineer, such is the respect and admiration for the man within the upper echelons of the Maserati decision-making structure.

However, there are significant rumblings at the ground level about how quickly the former driver has been promoted with little to no engineering experience - this spills over into outright mutiny for some of the pit crew, who elect to move on to pastures new, while those who do remain do so under some protest.

Gerard meanwhile has pledged his own future to the team, meaning that no offer made this season will entice him away regardless of how much it is!

Breaking News:

Porsche have confirmed that Posy Hansen has been promoted to the position of Race Engineer in the team, which has delighted the young former Crew Chief no end - so much so that he has committed his future to the team, which means that no offer made this season will entice him away regardless of how much it is!

What Hansen hasn't bargained for is the downright fury of one Bernie Ecclestone, the remaining Crew Chief at Porsche - who is keen to have things his own way and deliberately makes sweeping changes in the remaining staff to remove several who were loyal to Posy Hansen initially! That has had a significant impact on both the Skill levels in the team and the Motivation of those who remain...

BRM have confirmed the promotion of Mike Pilbeam to the position of Crew Chief.

Mr Pilbeam is said to be so pleased with the promotion that he has announced that no offer made this season will entice him away regardless of how much it is!

Rumours abound in BRM that Tony Rudd now has his own position under threat - which has caused a schism in the team, and means that several pit crew members have quit to get away from the bickering and in-fighting, while others just seem to be demotivated at how the team has started to fall apart...!

Breaking News:

Ferrari have confirmed that ex-driver Paul Pietsch has been promoted to the position of Race Engineer, which has caused issues in the team - given that Fabrizio Giovanardi is an engineer by trade and Pietsch has only learned the ropes of working with the Crew more recently.

While Pietsch has confirmed that no offer made this season will entice him away regardless of how much it is, the rest of the team are none too pleased about the German's promotion - and that causes several crew members to quit on the spot at what is perceived to be the lack of advancement available to the average pit-crew person!

Maserati have confirmed another promotion, in the shape of Guerino Bertocchi, who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position - though many of Gerard's supporters in the team view the move as proof of the lack of faith in the Chief Race Engineer's abilities, which is enough for a whole host to depart the crew. That is a huge drain on Maserati's ground level experience and the general mood of the crew!

Bertocchi meanwhile has pledged his own future to the team, meaning that no offer made this season will entice him away, regardless of how much it is.

Connaught have also confirmed the promotion of a Crew Chief, as Frank Spencer steps up and is said to be so deligthed that no offer made this season will entice him away and he was also quoted as saying "Oooh Betty", though no-one was quite sure what to make of that...

...since this very public declaration, the remaining Connaught crew members seem divided by the appointment and several have elected to leave the team to seek employment elsewhere and with morale sinking the newly promoted Crew Chief's only comment was "Whoopsie..."

In an attempt to attempt to the quell the obvious discontent that was flowing in the Connaught garage, the Team Principal released the statement below, early media reports seem to feel this followed a heavy night on the vodka.........

"Promotion of staff is not a decision that we take lightly, all our team members are valued and we appreciate all of their efforts. However, after much discussion we felt it only fitting to promote a staff member who's abilities most reflect the team performances so far this season. We would hope that this promotion would help redouble the efforts of our existing team, as it shows that promotion is directly linked to team performance."

Early reports from the Connaught garage indicate that tea boy Benny Hill is devastated that rumours indicate the team will not be competing next year.

Cooper elect to promote Patrick Shufflebottom to Race Engineer - while brother Cecil sits by and waits...and this causes outrage amonst the normally taciturn community, who are firmly divided as to which brother deserves the position more...

....but the larger issue is other teams coming in to poach the key members of the crew, which leads to some jumping ship ASAP, while others wait for more favourable terms...!

Amidst all of this madness, Patrick Shufflebottom releases a statement expressing his thanks to the Cooper team and pledging his support to them that no offer made this season will entice him away .

Aston Martin - besides selling a L4 Engine - have also elected to promote a new Crew Chief in the shape of Cyril Symonds. This is the first appointment of a Crew Chief in the F1R team's history - and seemingly this has delayed some pay-rises that several pit-crew members had been expecting, which causes walk-outs, recriminations and a general drop in both skill and morale levels amongst the crew...

Meanwhile Cyril Symonds has released his own statement thanking Aston Martin for the opportunity to blaze a new trail and pleding that no offer made this season will entice him away.

Maserati have promoted Vittorio Bellentani to Race Engineer alongside Bob Gerard, which has caused outrage amongst supporters of Gerard in the team, that the newly promoted Bellentani is now considered to be at the same level as the ex-superstar driver and multiple World Champion!

That causes mass walkouts in the pit crew, leading to a loss of skills and morale within the Maserati team...

Team Principals - from the end of this season onwards all game changes will be voted on by yourselves - with majority rules. Check your Mailbox in the coming weeks for the list of proposals for the 1960 F1R season.

Not many changes planned for next season FYI - though one BIG one that does impact a couple of game areas...
