Ok, a dedicated thread, rather than taking an existing one off topic, to decide if we have enough interest for any sort of tournament or league, and how it could be run, and also where it should be run.
Firstly, for those unfamiliar with the game Diplomacy, instructions can be found here =>>> http://www.diplom.org/~diparch/resources/rulebooks/2000AH4th.pdf.
There are also two (that I know of) sites where you can play this game :
http://webdiplomacy.net/index.php (formerly phpdiplomacy) http://www.playdiplomacy.com/
Finally, if you wanted to play off of one of these site you could download a jdip viewer/player here =>>> http://jdip.sourceforge.net/
Now that has been covered, there are probably three issues that need addressing. One is where do we hold any competition, the second is what format is it held in, and finally is who is interested.
There are two options for any games, one is to hold them at one of the sites shown above, the other is to play them through GPRO, using the forums and PMs. Both have advantages and disadvantages to them.
GPRO - advantages - everyone is already registered here, we have total control of the games,
GPRO - disadvantages - moves have to be sent to the games 'controller' (or GM), the game will need a GM meaning that each game might require 8 players instead of 7, the game can stick if a player misses their turn or if the GM is unavailable.
Offsite - advantages - game is controlled and run for us, and orders can be input directly without needing to communicate them to another person
Offsite - disadvantages - we dont have direct control in case of replacements, its another site that people have to log into.
I am sure that I have missed some bits from these lists.
As for structure, we could have a 'knockout' where either just the winner or the final 2 or 3 progress to the next round, or some sort of league, where you score either on how long you last, or how many SCs you control. Again, there are probably other options.
Finally, interest, please post saying if you would be interested in taking part in some sort of competition, stating if you can how much Diplomacy experience you have.
Diplomacy is a game that requires you to be active more or less every day, and is a game that can take several weeks to complete. Please dont say you will join if you dont think you will be able to do this. It may be worth registering on one of the above sites and having a go to see if you like the game or not. The second site above currently has at least one GPRO game active, and others can probably be set up to get people playing.
Comments, ideas, and interest are welcomed :) I will try and keep a list of those people that have expressed an interest :)

I would prefer to play the game at one of the sites mentioned above. As I see it, there's only one bigger disadvantage in it - problem with replacements.
Hosting the games here means games could be prolonged unnecessarily if some players miss deadlines or host goes missing (ongoing games are perfect examples). It also takes more work and there is always a chance of human mistakes.
I have currently active account at playdiplomacy.com. I have played about 10 diplomacy games so far. All of them online.
As I see it, cup system would be more interesting. The more you advance, the better you have to play. League system would also probably last longer and people might lose their interest at some point.

Interested - but unlike Mikko, I'd prefer hosting it here, possibly with a back up GM.
As for people who don't send their orders, unless they've sent a valid reason to the GM(s), they are treated as Holding all units.
Experience: 4-5 games, plus extensive experience with strategic board games in general.

If course I'm interested. I've played about 3 games in my life.
External site is too much easier. Regarding replacements etc, the external site I've tried continued the game after a player left. It merely put the deserted nation on a orders hold position. A replacement would have to know any password to join the deserted nation.

You need to log into more than one site though; and you tend to check messages from other players less number of times on external site than you tend to check it on GPRO.

I am not going to let this die. It is a very good idea. Count me in as interested. I think we have enough interested people to start organizing something, don't we?
I think hosting it on GPRO might be better. If everybody uses jDip there really isn't much in favor of external site. And I noticed I tend to use jDip playing external sites, too, just to aid my planning and playing some scenarios ahead. So the only drawback would be GM going missing, but if we choose them wisely and maybe have replacement GM's, then I think it should be smooth :)
Or is it running already and nobody told me? :P

I lost interest in Dip again :(
Played on that other site and it just takes too long to get a game going, and when you do players go missing from even the first round :(

Yeah, I am struggling with a game on an other site, too. So little communication (despite no one missing yet). It made me thinking that with GPRO people it should be much better.
