Quote ( James Hitchen @ September 24th 2021,17:15:07 ) It’s only BP who are temporarily closing sites as far as I’m aware, and that’s due to lack of HGV drivers.
Not true, Asda Chelmsford shut tonight and massive queues around Sainsbury’s. Exactly the same thing happened with Covid and toilet rolls, pasta, milk and bread being stockpiled. And yeah, it’s all to do with Brexit !

We had one here a few months back on the east coast in the US due to a pipeline issue... people were putting fuel in trash bags then surprised when their cars lit on fire...
humans are sometimes really, REALLY stupid.

Ask the question "Do you panic buy?", and you will get a universal "Never, never, never. I just happen to be short of fuel/pasta/toilet rolls/rice/flour...... It's everyone else that panic buys"

Quote ( Adrian Ghita @ September 24th 2021,18:37:42 ) Brexit is the main problem. Is Brexit the problem or is it just that Brexit has removed the pool of exploitable, under-paid drivers that companies have previously relied on? Is it a driver shortage or a fair wage issue? Just my pondering from the other side of the world.

IMHO I reckon the second.... For years employers have been able to treat drivers like dirt as there was a pool of drivers across the channel that could be relied on to fill any gaps. After Brexit the pool has been drained. Read somewhere that of the total number of UK drivers holding HGV licences, only approx 50% are currently driving - the rest are doing jobs with better pay and conditions

it's curious to why they would of come here in the first place given the UK pay for HGV drivers is lower than a lot in Western europe and also as you quite rightly say the conditions while on the road are worse than those in europe. Alot of that is not down to the companies but the infastructure of the UK which the government have allowed to either not keep up with our european counterparts or have allowed them to be removed totally. I think part of it is they have taken better opportunities in Europe, including some of the english drivers.
Honestly it's a lot more complex.
It's partially the hostile environment the UK govt and a portion of the population have made it for those workers.
You also have the fact that alot of the drivers who had been here a long time , the £ has got so poor vs the Euro that its not worth their while.
Also you have the pure logisitics of getting freight in and out of the country due to the extra friction on the borders, Also in this regard European drivers who may have taken a leg into the UK are not doing it any more as it's more hassle than its worth.
Its clear Brexit is the main driver to most of the recent problems, as if you look at Northern Ireland , they have had no shortage of Co2 , they have had no shortage of fuel. In fact there only issue has been getting goods from the UK into Northern ireland due to all the extra barriers put in place.
But it's all good, we can get all the OAP'S who are going to spend more time here because they can't stay on the Costa's for more than 3 months to drive them in between their hospital appointments of course :)
The main problem is you will never get someone who voted brexit own that they have caused the shit show, by taking us out of europe with no plan to actually move forward afterwards :)
Edit : Also I forgot to add current suggestions from leading Brexitters to deal with the shortage of drivers are
1) get HGV drivers to work longer hours (Nigel Farage) 2) Get Prisoners to driver HGV's (Dominic Raab)
Anyone with half a brain cell knows that they are both terrible idea's, as would increase the risk of these vehicles on the road

Yeah I did not mean to imply that the UK pay was good.. I know the major hauliers paid as little as possible.....
And BTW I speak as an OAP who would much rather be on the Costas than stuck in the freezing wet UK - and I have never panic bought anything!!!!

Quote ( Keith Partridge @ October 4th 2021,11:23:18 ) Yeah I did not mean to imply that the UK pay was good.. I know the major hauliers paid as little as possible.....
That was not what I was trying to say, my point was if when we were in the EU we managed to attract enough drivers, while not losing them to the better pay and conditions in europe , being part of the EU was not the problem causing the pay and conditions to be bad, if anything it should of been dragging it upwards because of the competition for drivers.
If anyone is foolish enough to believe that we will suddenly find the 100,000 HGV drivers we are short from within in the UK , they are having a laugh our whole system is set up to drive people towards more glamorous jobs, our government constantly talk about a high skill , high pay environment, they don't mean HGV drivers in this.
But they forget that in all of this you will still need all of those people who are on low pay who were deemed keyworkers throughout the pandemic.

Stop the politicians from working for a month and virtually nobody would notice, stop the cleaners, truck drivers etc for a month and any country will grind to a halt.

In any job, always make friends with the secretaries/office staff and the janitors because they are the people who really make any workplace run properly.
Far too many people fail to realize just how many marginalized groups actually filled the jobs that keep things running. Chasing off people who filled those jobs for political/hate/religious reasons, then complaining about how nobody wants to work anymore is the height of hypocracy.

my advice is to go to nearest country in France/Ireland and then buy a lot of fuel and sell it on the street like we did in Serbia '90. during the period of hiper-inflation.

Did you have Covid travel restrictions and a sea around Serbia in the 90s?
