Located 30km to the north of Florence in the hills of the Chianti region, this track offers one of the most picturesque settings of them all. Racing here can be traced back to the 1920's, when Maserati and Ferrari were among those doing battle around a 40 mile track made up of public roads. The closed circuit of today began life in the 1970's, a superb sweeping circuit set within a tree-lined Tuscan valley. It hosted its first MotoGP race in 1976 and continues to stage the Italian round of the MotoGP championship. The track was bought by Ferrari in 1988 for use as a testing facility and has since seen substantial investment, to upgrade both track and facilities. The track boasts advanced safety features, with wide run-off areas at the tricky corners and a service road covering the full length of the circuit. Its undulating layout makes it an ideal choice for a rigourous test session. Apart from Ferrari, the track is used extensively for testing by MotoGP and World Superbike teams, as well as some of the world's leading car manufacturers. Mugello has never staged an F1 Grand Prix, though it did play host to a Formula 2 race as well as the International Touring Car Championship.
