Last saturday, I had dinner with my family and on a moment my mother said "but today is already tomorrow", so I answered "today will never be tomorrow, as today will always be today" and my father then said that with that idea, then present doesn't exist, as when you try to get it, it will already be past. I think present exist but only on the smallest time frame possible (and impossible too)
I also thought on that moment that it was an interesting topic to see on GPRO, and see your opinions on the matter

I guess when you are just short of 3 metres tall and are built like a stick, starting a conversation will always be difficult...

Does anything exactly exist at all?
I mean, using the logic, isn't there just 'this side of the object' and 'that side of the object', but no object exists at all in the universe, because the exact location is undeterminable with your finger?
aka you fail =/

hahah to be fair we have similar random discussions at our table. I think its down to perspective. I see today as the present... some ppl view the year..month... others that second :)

Leaving aside the fact that time moves at different speeds in different places, as it isn't that relevant for us Earth-dwellers, the saying 'tomorrow never comes' is really just a linguistic trick. The day with which you previously imbued the concept of 'tomorrow' arrives all the time, but by the time it does the term applies to the day after that. Trying to say otherwise sounds a little like casuistry to me.

The present does exist, it's just continually moving at the same rate as time.

Does light have conscience? If yes, what kind of thoughts the light have? :)
Quote ( Cristian Morales @ December 3rd 2012,20:47:47 ) I think present exist but only on the smallest time frame possible (and impossible too) Your question can be written in the following way: Time is discrete or continuous?
No one knows yet the answer and I doubt that some day we will know. Like the answer for the question about light conscience.

Present has existed for the last 19 years so of course it exists.

Hold a long piece of string between two fingers so that the string falls to the ground in a 'vertical' line.
Thread a bead or similar object over the string at the top and then release it.
If you try to point to where the bead is whilst it is falling you will not be able to do so because it is moving.
Time is just the same, because it is constantly moving you can never precisely point to exactly where it is, because when you do that 'moment is gone'
And that is string theory explained :p

but what we perceive as the present is actually the past because it takes time for our brains to process the information.

I guess that all depends on the unit of time you're measuring in, if it's thousandths of a second then maybe but if it's days, months or years then you can get present for quite a while.

I reference the movie Spaceballs for a sophisticated discussion of this topic :)
Otherwise, the present could be considered an ambiguous concept. The present in geological time is a very different thing, than saying at the present time I am typing this post.

But wouldn't that be irrelevant though? That's how our brains register scenarios, including time, but time is constant and is always there...
